It's definitely not 'conserving energy' so I'd guess it's an un-normalized transfer function for the distribution (or a misplaced decimal point).
But then I see it's happening at the edges of some local grid, so are there any unititialized edges, wrapping, or accessing random memory, or incorrectly ignoring the edge of the grid? (it's OK to ignore the edge, but it'll refelct unless you damp it!)
