I'm not using any LLM or "AI" for anything that I write or draw. Never had, and never will.

I'm making this choice because:

• This technology was built by unethically stealing the hard work of millions without any consent or compensation.

• This technology has and is still constantly scraping data, including personal data, from people without their knowledge or consent, in complete disregard of the privacy laws we have to protect us.

• This technology unnecessarily uses vast amounts of energy in a world where using more energy sadly usually means more pollution.

• This technology is working on devaluating labor in order to enrich even more the already rich, aggravating poverty everywhere.

• This technology is misleadingly being sold as a solution to problems it cannot solve.

• This technology is supercharging disinformation and manipulation online, centralizing an incredible power of influence in the hands of a few controlling billionaires.

• This technology is increasingly being used by authoritarian governments in order to surveil and control the people.

• This technology atrophies our creativity and capability to think, as well as harming our social relationships.

• This technology makes my writing voice feel flat and boring. I'd rather learn to live with my human tipos.

• This technology...

You're so right! BRaINs™️ for the win!
@r_alb 🧠✨
@Em0nM4stodon @r_alb “Thinking meat! You're asking me to believe in thinking meat!”
@Em0nM4stodon OpenAI is going to implode lol. They don't even make money.
@Em0nM4stodon But, Hype! Grift! You will be left behind if everyone else does it! You will die from our pollution anyway!
@Em0nM4stodon Not a single tipo to be spotted all over your post 😆 Perfect style perfect message.
@martinrust No tipo ✌️😁

@Em0nM4stodon

In addition to all of that: It really doesn't work.

As a society we are spending more and more money for software that is less predictable and reliable.

A lot of people are okay with destroying the planet for something that doesn't work reliably and most people do not want.

Anyone with at least two working brain cells should have become anti-LLM and anti-chatbot the instant they understood the concept of hallucinations.

@EFreethought @Em0nM4stodon

When does a cognitive crutch morph into a cognitive dependency? Or then to a cognitive prison?

Like a dependency on cocaine, lots of people delude themselves they can avoid addiction, until their supply gets too expensive or unavailable.

Watching people go cold turkey during the height of the covid pandemic was reportedly horrific.

What happens when the LLM is manipulated to give only Republican viewpoints? Or only antivaxxer ideology?

1/

2/

Or pro-fossil fuel perspectives? Or pro-evangelical indoctrination? Or pro-slavery history lessons?

What happens to the users of these AI companies when the startup goes bankrupt in the AI bubble? It's stolen data, what happens to the data in a bankruptcy?

What happens when mandated use of an energy wasteful application comes before preventing an ecocide, mass unemployment, or double digit electricity rate increases?

The dependency can be abused to get government bailouts & subsidies.

@EFreethought @Em0nM4stodon here's a weird argument I haven't seen yet - even if it works, even if it's alll the techbros say it is, it's so heavily subsidised by ventures capitalism that we aren't paying the true price for what we get.

There's no way we can do a correct value proposition as a consumer until the pricing accurately reflects true cost.

Until the AI companies stop doing "give me money pls, it's cool bro" investment rounds, consumers *shouldn't ever* build production systems around them.

@Taco_lad @Em0nM4stodon

I think things for OpenAI and Anthropic will end one of two ways: They collapse under all their debt, or they raise their prices through the roof.

Either way, anyone who has made themselves or their processes dependent upon them will be in a serious bind.

@Em0nM4stodon
I like the quote from one of Jack Dorsey's employees after being told they have to start using AI: "If it actually worked we'd be using it already."

@tanquist @Em0nM4stodon then there's those that are all in, like this company in Milwaukee: "We are building an AI-first company." Looking for their AI Enablement & Systems Manager.

@Em0nM4stodon It depends on what type of AI and what you use it for. I'm using an AI program, a grammar checker named language tool, but while a talk claims it uses a neural net, others stated the free version is just an expert system. It runs as a server, so I wrote some code to feed it text while tracking line numbers and pruning out equations and coding examples. What it spits back is then turned into compiler-like error messages and I made the corrections manually.
@Em0nM4stodon To add a bit more, the AI program I used runs on a desktop computer. It found spastic-typing mistakes such as double commas and some bad editing - changing a noun from singular to plural, getting interrupted by someone with a pressing problem, and then forgetting that I hadn't changed the verb. It probably saved energy - otherwise the computer would have had to be turned on longer due to having to read all that text - over 400 pages - carefully.

@Em0nM4stodon

I dunno. The AI has made me much much more productive as my work involves me learning lots of new technical concepts and software all the time. It reduces a lot of barriers to understanding. I find it hugely helpful, but I do despise AI written content.

@mikeinthecloud @Em0nM4stodon If you can find one that won't be a condescending prick, a human works much better for this.

I can adapt very quickly. I've had to my entire career. I didn't find some place and stay there so had to rebuild domain expertise every time.

It's gotten harder as I've aged but I've always considered it a very important skill. I wonder if I'd have developed it if I had a butt kissing AI instead of a bunch of condescending pricks to ask for help.

RTFM :p

@crazyeddie @Em0nM4stodon first have to find that human, then they have to have the time to help you. I do not have that. As for an AI not being a ‘condescending prick’ you just need to get you prompt source correct. Try “non verbose answers” I find that cuts dow a lot of the fluff on the outputs.

But yeh, things like “I need to list all the files in this dir, filter for only pdf, then combine them, then run it though pandoc to convert to markdown, give me the shell commands”

@Em0nM4stodon this technology makes you stupider.

@Em0nM4stodon

...spends tonnes of electricity and water to do something that you could probably do in five minutes?

@Em0nM4stodon I could not agree with this post more! Well done!
@Em0nM4stodon I agree with everything you mentioned in your post, but LLMs are here to stay. I mean, if I recall correctly, they're investing trillions of dollars in them. Besides that, I asked my friends in IT about LLM use. Love it or hate it, they're actively encouraging its use, even in security. My friend told me they're considering agent deployment to automate many security tasks.

@rahulsetrakian @Em0nM4stodon Yeah. It's being forced into everything to justify and puff up the investment.

Microsoft jams AI into every product they sell and now every product they sell is AI profit. See?

Why do the ones who don't have business in AI hop on board? Get talked into the shit by their rich buddies. VCs and shit are all up in AI. Anything they invest in AI has to be jammed into it so that AI profit goes up.

It's an investment bubble. People are catching on though.

@rahulsetrakian @Em0nM4stodon Um, no, they're really not and we don't need more simps for their inevitably narrative. The whole industry is hemorrhaging cash, and when that dries up, it all crashes. Everybody hates this shit. Nobody wants it except the pushers. Even all the models you can download will be horribly outdated in short time, and nobody is going to spend astronomical amounts of cash making updated ones when there's no longer the hope of scamming people with them. We absolutely can eradicate this shit and start repairing.

It seems like a good time to say this for the record: Our lessons are not generated by AI. At all. Ever. Our teaching resources are 100% created by humans. We work with professional educators, subject-matter experts, cultural consultants and sensitivity readers who are all experienced, talented, dedicated people. Because we care about creating high quality teaching resources to support educators and students. We're proud to be the real deal. We are a non-profit and we make our resources available for free. Thank you for recommending us to the teachers, schools and community educators who are looking for alternatives to AI slop. Teachers and learners deserve better. Please take a look around our resource library and help yourself to anything you'd like. https://journeysinfilm.org/resource-library/?utm_source=Masotodon&utm_medium=Social+Media&utm_campaign=NoAi&utm_content=link #Education #Edutooters #EdTech #NoAI #Homeschooling #TeachingResources

@JourneysInFilm Wonderful! This is the way 🙌
@Em0nM4stodon Thank you! Teachers and students really need support, especially as the education field is *flooded* with AI and unsupported AI hype. We are doing everything we can to help.
@JourneysInFilm Indeed! Thank you for advocating for quality human education for all! This is so important!
@Em0nM4stodon and what else? Maybe tell me that you use your brain to think? Phew!
@Em0nM4stodon Reasons I don't use LLM's/Ai:
1) all of this
2) I have no reason to use it.
3) I don't trust it's answers. At all.

@Em0nM4stodon I have yet to find a personal use case for AI/LLMs.

Last time I checked, they are incapable of sewing alterations for my clients, weeding my yard, cooking for me, or cleaning toilets. I have been trained in research, and still read (real) books.
