Hey #Fediverse, is it possible to follow #Lemmy users from #Mastodon? Or only Lemmy communities? Asking for a #FediFriend ;-) cc: @Mastodon @FediTips

@7sleepersmusic I thought it was only communities myself (disclaimer: i know nothing). Activitypub is a curious standard that is rarely adhered to.
@7sleepersmusic Although I can see my Feddit.uk account from here. I just can't see any posts i've made or replied to.
@emsquared Yeah, I'm not having much luck either. It would be a nice feature!
@7sleepersmusic I do find activitypub annoyingly disjointed like this. I get that, say Pixelfed is largely for sharing images and not following Mastodon accounts but you do kind of end up with all these accounts all over the place rather than somewhere that's a hub for following and interacting with people.
@7sleepersmusic I get that i see zero posts. Peertube is like that in that once i subscribe to someone over on peertube I then see new posts from that point and and not before but if i can't find people at all because nobody on my server is following them yet then it gets a tad more frustrating.
@emsquared TBH I still haven't wrapped my head around how it all works! I mostly treat my various Fedi accounts as separate entities, even tho I could probably just use one account for all of them. I guess I just got used to the fragmented world of corporate social media. Old habits die hard!
@7sleepersmusic I know it is confusing. In theory they all use the same protocol (ActivityPub) so can interact but it's a very loose protocol implemented in vary varying ways precisely because it is not a corporate structure and often admins are one man bands but it's what let's Ghost and Flipboard users be seen here. . I mean I can see various Lemmy.World accounts from where I am but that might not be the case on other instances. It is quite the mind boggles which explains why most centralised social media remains more popular as it's easier to grasp even if your privacy and your data is their money pot.
@7sleepersmusic also if you have the Lemmy user address you search for it on accounts as [email protected] or similar or @user etc. You'll only see their posts from the moment after you subscribe and because they are often replying to others it might not be shown and thus subscribing to the communities looks better from here.
@emsquared Ah, okay, I think I get it. So I'm guessing that the reason we can't subscribe to "@[email protected]" or "[email protected]" is because the admins of "startrek.website" haven't made that possible? Or something like that? (I'm not criticizing the admins, BTW, just tryna understand!)
@7sleepersmusic Well I can see @startrek but not that user so maybe that's an individual account setting. Hard to know.

@wordsmith Ah, got it, thank you! :-)

@7sleepersmusic Normally, yes. It is possible to follow Lemmy accounts from Mastodon.

Given that this is an official account of one of the stars of Star Trek: Academy it is strange that it doesn't allow follows.

Perhaps a setting needs changed? The admins over there might be able to help if informed.
