Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol handed life sentence for leading insurrection

Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol was sentenced to life in prison Thursday after a court found him guilty of leading an insurrection during his short-lived imposition of martial law, which plunged the country into political chaos and threatened to unravel decades of democracy.

@heidilifeldman So glad they managed to handle it!
@heidilifeldman *sigh* Life could be so sweet.
@heidilifeldman that was probably the weirdest martial law invocation of at least the past 20 years...

@heidilifeldman

And look at Britain. They still DO have the rule of law. Bravo UK!

@heidilifeldman This is what happens in a functioning democracy with the rule of law

@heidilifeldman It's a great South Korean tradition. They have one term limit. The second term is in prison or in exile.

I firmly believe that this is how it should work everywhere. Few can wield unrestrained power - and the power of the highest office is always poorly restrained if at all - for several years and never abuse it.

@heidilifeldman Support 100%. Life and no parole.

Edit: you know what? I've reconsidered. I'm not in favor of the death penalty generally, but I am in favor of the death penalty here.

@heidilifeldman
People sound like MAGA when they say stuff like "America's not a true democracy" imo.
@heidilifeldman let's be a bit careful with what exactly we're calling "real democracy" here. I know the bar is low compared to the US but....you know... caution is still warranted.
@heidilifeldman A democracy is only as strong as the people who are represented by it. If S. Korea had elected a bunch of psychopath Republicans to their Congress this guy would have never been impeached. In a similar fashion if the American people hadn't re-elected Trump he would be in or on his way to prison.
@heidilifeldman
Perhaps Korea will set a worldwide trend^^
