You may be tempted to roll your eyes and say that this was obvious, but there is a substantive difference between pointing out there is a slippery slope and having solid evidence that Ring's CEO is planning to expand Search Party beyond lost pets. Kudos to 404 Media.

Leaked Email Suggests Ring Plans to Expand ‘Search Party’ Surveillance Beyond Dogs

Ring's CEO told staff the feature is “first for finding dogs,” indicating a plan to expand.

404 Media
@evacide 404 have been doing absolutely incredible work over the past few years, especially for such a small team. Genuinely impactful journalism.
@evacide Color me shocked...said no one who’s been paying attention. 😑

@WideEyedCurious @evacide And yet there are many who haven't been paying attention, and who live in a bubble made of "Surely that can't be true, because it couldn't possibly be that bad".

Accurate reporting that spells it out is something we need to help puncture that bubble.

@StryderNotavi @WideEyedCurious @evacide "Why do you hate finding lost puppies?"
@evacide Another reason I won't install Ring anything.

@evacide And there is a host of Ring apologists on here.

We can't stress the traitorous nature of that crap enough.

@androcat @evacide I like my Ring doorbell and find it useful.

@jn @evacide
I am sure the people it helps kill will understand.

And not know that your choice to keep it spying makes you an enemy and a bad person.

Do you own a Tesla too, by any chance?

Oh, and you're a fucking Chomskyist. I didn't even notice.
Having fun with your pseudoscience nonsense dreamt up by a pedophile defender?

@evacide I also want to point out that to "zero out crime", as the Ring CEO called it, may sound desirable, but only police states have zero crime.

In an open and free democratic society there is always an inevitable base floor of crime.

@flipper @evacide Well… almost true, the big crimes are committed by the state.

@evacide

ANY product networked back to some corporate mothership should be a no-go for anyone (big brother lovers obviously excused--and pitied.).

As for this ring thang? I mean hello? Amazon? Alexia? Spying on their users since November 2017 when it was proved amazon was recording everything their alexa devices could hear. (see amazon alexa wiki entry for deets)

People. Pay attention! MegaDigiCorps _always_ lie about privacy. And they don't stop when they are caught either.

@evacide Yeah, I feel good about my 404media sub. They’re out there doing serious journalism.
@evacide feels a lot like how they tried to sell us on "Stop and Frisk." Or the "If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about" b.s. line they fed us.

@evacide
This summarized it for me:

"automated surveillance system" "uses AI" "on-by-default"

#AI #decentralization

@evacide It's basically the ones they have in shopping centres since early to mid last year, maybe earlier, but now on the streets. I don't even think they've been effective, other then being a privacy issue for many, including myself. I cover my bank card with my entire hand, so the AI can't steal my numbers. It's sad I'm not allowed to wear a balaclava while shopping.

@evacide

when I saw the superbowl ad it was an instant "jfc" moment. nothing good is going to come of Ring's plans.

@evacide This shouldn't come as much of a surprise. Ring's CEO has been very clear the company's intention is to "solve crime"
@evacide Unfortunately, after the intro comes a paywall. By the way, in Germany It's not allowed by law to film anything beide your own land. Hopefully this buys us some time before stuff like ring is introduced here.
@evacide If a product is designed to ever be capable of a bad use then you should strongly suspect it was designed to allow such use.
@evacide anyone who think this won't happen now... I also have a vacation in the beautiful red planet mars to sell you. They are going ahead with this to please the likes of pedo on chief's admin along with multiple three & one five letter agencies now, not as a public facing "feature" but as part of critical national security & intelligence apparatuses.
@evacide I'm shocked. Shocked!
@evacide perhaps the system can be used to search for pedophiles too.
@evacide It is pretty notable when 404 finds a file that we thought wouldn't be found.
@evacide There shouldn't be as much difference as there is though. People need to get cynical about this stuff in a hurry. There is no excuse for still being this gullible.

@evacide

I promptly ended my Ring subscription when Amazon announced it was turning on face-scanning on them last December. I live in NY and my apartment building is majority immigrants from Africa and the Dominican Republic. Everyone has Amazon packages delivered daily. No, you will not get me to use my camera for surveillance on any of them. And the pet scanning was super sus.
