Photo of the fatal Tesla accident on the 126 yesterday. (very bad one).

"...The CHP said later in a news release that a 61-year-old Modesto woman died in the crash. She was in a Tesla with a 60-year-old driver who suffered major injuries and was airlifted to Ventura County Medical Center.

The pair from Modesto had been traveling eastbound on Highway 126 when, for unknown reasons, they veered across the highway and into the westbound lanes, according to the CHP...."

@ai6yr I'm just going to assume the Tesla was driving itself.
@FuturisticRobert
I might misremember but "for unknown reasons, ... veered across the highway..." sounds like a pretty common Tesla issue for me.

This video of an extremely similar crash makes me wonder what the heck is going on. I wonder if it's faulty lane control software.

They accidentally changed the country USA to England?

Tesla: “you’re activating auto pilot in the wrong way”

Typical driver in the future: “I told you Hank! ‘There’s going to be a large solar flare’, but you never listen!”

@ai6yr @mythlfrythtyg @FuturisticRobert Do they know if this was the driver controlling the car or if it was autopilot?
@mwguy @mythlfrythtyg @FuturisticRobert No idea on this one, the vehicle was completely obliterated, but they were going to tow it for evidence.

@ai6yr @mythlfrythtyg @FuturisticRobert This just seems like a mistake a human wouldn't make; and I obviously could be wrong. But this is just not what I'd expect.

It looks like a swerve for no reason.

@mwguy @mythlfrythtyg @FuturisticRobert The video swerve looks automated and like something glitched, IMHO. Like it lost the lane location or GPS or something crazy.

@mythlfrythtyg @FuturisticRobert @ai6yr "...for unknown reasons..."

Yeah I think we can agree the reasons are pretty well-known by now.

@FuturisticRobert @ai6yr especially in bad weather, autopilot needs a lot of attention
@ai6yr
The only time I drove a Tesla i had to yank the wheel when it tried to drive directly into construction barricades and light rail tracks (at least 3 different occasions within the same 1 week rental). It took a lot of strength (and speed!) for me to fight that and i could totally understand a sixty year old person not being able to overcome it
@ai6yr
You couldn't pay me to get into a Tesla, even without all the Nazi crap 😬
@ai6yr Am I right in identifying the helicopter as an S-70, the civilian version of the H-60?
@mythlfrythtyg HH-60L, converted Black Hawk from the US Army.

@ai6yr One of those. Ok.

For a moment I was wondering about a rescue helicopter of those size but tbh it really makes sense when used in this multi-role.
Over here most of the rescue helicopters are Eurocopter EC145. And firefighting? Mostly Bambi Buckets.

@mythlfrythtyg Yeah, this is like a giant flying bus... mostly useful because you can pull multiple patients off the side of a mountain and not run into power issues.

@ai6yr

You have to be nuts to drive a Tesla. Got an Uber ride to the airport last week and it was terrifying.

@ai6yr

"Tesla vehicles had a fatal crash rate of 5.6 fatalities per billion miles driven, higher than the U.S. average of 2.8."

More than 2x the average.
