The foreign ministries of the #UK, #France, #Germany, #Sweden & the #Netherlands said analysis of samples from #Navalny, who died 2 years ago, “have conclusively confirmed the presence of epibatidine.”

Alexei Navalny poisoned with rare toxin from poison dart frogs, say European labs

Five European countries say Russia poisoned Alexei Navalny with a rare toxin linked to poison dart frogs. On Saturday, the U.K., France, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands say European lab tests confirmed epibatidine in his body. They say the toxin does not occur naturally in Russia. They argue Russia has the means, motive and opportunity to administer the poison. They also reported Russia to the chemical weapons watchdog, which did not comment immediately. The Russian opposition leader died in a Russian Arctic penal colony in 2024. Russia denied wrongdoing and says he died naturally.

Epibatidine is a toxin found in poison dart frogs in South America that is not found naturally in #Russia, they said.

The countries said in a joint statement that “Russia had the means, motive & opportunity to administer this poison.” They said they were reporting Russia to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons [#OPCW] for a breach of the #ChemicalWeapons Convention.

British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said “#Russia saw #Navalny as a threat. By using this form of #poison the Russian state demonstrated the despicable tools it has at its disposal & the overwhelming fear it has of political opposition.”

Navalny, who crusaded against official #corruption & staged massive anti-Kremlin protests as #Putin’s fiercest foe, died in the Arctic penal colony in February 2024. He was serving a 19-year sentence that was politically motivated.

#Navalny’s widow, #YuliaNavalnaya, said last year that 2 independent labs had found that her husband was poisoned shortly before he died. #Navalnaya has repeatedly blamed #Putin for Navalny’s death, something Russian officials deny.

Navalnaya said Saturday that she had been “certain from the first day” that her husband had been poisoned, “but now there is proof.”

“Putin killed Alexei with chemical weapon,” she wrote on social media, calling Putin “a murderer” who “must be held accountable.”

Russian authorities claimed that the politician became ill after a walk & died from natural causes.

In 2020, #Navalny was poisoned with a nerve agent attack he blamed on the Kremlin, which denied involvement. His family & allies fought to have him flown to Germany for treatment & recovery. 5 months later, he returned to #Russia, where he was immediately arrested & imprisoned for the last 3 years of his life.

@Nonilex Putin was already clearly a monster. But when he killed Navalny, that was a point of no return. When I think about 47 allowing this mass murderer onto Alaskan ground, I see that is also the point of no return for 47. 47 should have been impeached and imprisoned just for that alone.
