Five reasons why I stopped supporting Putin, after the post the former supporter Ilya Remeslo ends up in a psychiatric hospital.

A sudden, harsh post against the power that had previously supported it. Then hospitalization in a psychiatric facility. This is the story of Ilya Remeslo, a figure considered close to the Kremlin until just a few days before, now at the center of a case that is sparking discussion inside and outside of Russia. On Tuesday evening, Remeslo posted on his Telegram channel, followed by approximately 90,000 people, a lengthy message titled “Five Reasons Why I Stopped Supporting Vladimir Putin.” A clear change of position, in which he described the situation in Ukraine as a “failed war,” accusing the Russian president of causing enormous human losses and serious damage to the country’s economy.

Even harsher words followed when he questioned the legitimacy of the president himself, demanding his resignation and a trial as a “war criminal and thief.” A frontal attack that surprised both supporters of the government line and opposition groups. A few hours after the post was published, according to Russian and international media reports, Remeslo was admitted to the No. 3 Psychiatric Hospital in St. Petersburg, as also reported by the local Fontanka newspaper. A decision that recalls practices already used in the Soviet era, when psychiatric hospitalization was sometimes used against dissidents.

A 42-year-old lawyer and former member of a consultative body near the Kremlin, Remeslo had built his notoriety by attacking critics of the Russian government. In the past, he had expressed harsh criticism of Alexei Navalny, Putin’s main opponent, who died in February 2024 in a penal colony in the Arctic. And for his death, the family and five states directly accuse the occupant of the Kremlin.

It now remains to be clarified what happened in the hours following the post and what the conditions of the blogger are. The case shines a spotlight on the political climate in Russia and the increasingly restricted space for dissent.
