DeltaChat ist was fรผr Nerds, das kennt kein Mensch. Wir brauchen sichere Messenger fรผr technikferne Normalbรผrger!
#deltachat #signal

@Zeitzeuge_64 Delta Chat is not for the nerds, it is not so well known because it doesn't have some rich guy or millions of dollars behind and is not so heavily marketed

in Cuba Signal doesn't work at all, the SMS never arrives, similar happened in Iran, common non-nerd people manage to use Delta Chat there

@spla

@arcanechat @Zeitzeuge_64 @spla I didn't try it, maybe I should, but I am not very convinced by the idea of doing messaging with special things like polls via email. For me email is for emails and I'd rather use a protocol which is designed for messaging like #matrix or #xmmp.

I know XMPP has problems with fragmentation and Matrix seems to be centered a bit too much around synapse (definitely improving), does not allow me to delete accounts (test accounts!!) and has some other imperfections.

@cameo007 that is a misconception! it uses SMTP+IMAP protocols but it is not email, everything is end-to-end encrypted! you can give it a try, there is a contact invite link at https://arcanechat.me/#contact if you want to test it with someone

Private chats for the family

@arcanechat I knew about the encryption, but thank you for the hint!

@cameo007

> For me email is for emails and I'd rather use a protocol which is designed for messaging like #matrix or #xmmp

for the record, fun fact: while in xmpp clients encryption can downgrade in your existing chats at any point, in Delta Chat encryption of chats can never downgrade or the key change (ex. by malicious server trying to do MITM)

the "but email!?" is a common prejudice many people have until they actually try the app

@spla #XMPP ๐Ÿ‘ #Matrix ๐Ÿ‘
@frank xmpp is ok but it lacks good iOS apps. Matrix is slooow and consumes a lot of resources server side.
@spla @frank you mean synapse
@kitkat of course. Or Dendrite. @frank
@spla I don't have Apple stuff, but I guess @Monal is pretty good since they secured funding some time ago.
@frank @spla did you try Monal? It should have everything you need.
@Monal last time I tested Monal it was not working properly but I don't remember what was the issue. @frank
@Monal yes, tested it long time ago, is it worth a try now? @frank

@frank @spla yes, Monal we changed a lot. Since 2020 we gradually replaced every part of the app with completely new code. In Monal 5.0 a completely new group/channel implementation was introduced and in 6.0 audio and video calls were added.

Currently we are half part through rewriting the complete ui using Apple's new SwiftUI framework.

You can find the changelog here: https://github.com/monal-im/Monal/releases?page=1

When did you try Monal the last time?

@Monal I'm trying it right now, thank you. Last time I did it was two years ago or so.

@frank

@frank @spla great, let me know if something doesn't work.

We are currently working on a complete rewrite of the chat ui. This will allow us to implement reactions, rich replies, stickers etc.

@spla Wish the world/reality would be so simple :) ... it never is though
@spla what do you think about SimpleX?
@Lorenzorg never tested it.
