"I would never buy a Tesla, because I don’t want to drive a car built by a fascist. Many people think like me. Apple is dangerously close to suffering the same fate.”

@marcoarment oh. It’s not close. It’s there.

@marcoarment apropos of nothing, there is an economic strike this month:

Resist and Unsubscribe

@marcoarment @kevinrenskers
I know this won’t make a dent in their profits, but I’ve decided not to replace my 14 Pro Max until absolutely necessary (definitely not this year), cancelled all my AppleCare policies, and disabled automatic updates on all my devices. I no longer recommend or defend the company or its products.

Apple is no longer a trusted company in my book.

@freediverx 100% agreed, and I’m also not updating my devices. If enough people do it, hopefully it sends a message.

@kevinrenskers
The change to my position on automated updates was based on the realization that Apple is now turning iWork apps into yet another recurring wealth extraction mechanism. They downgraded Numbers on my iPhone and now the app is infested with a subscription ad. I managed to disable updates on all other devices before it could get to them.

I will not allow Apple to hold yet more of my data hostage. I'm now actively researching Linux alternatives for the first time since 2001.

@freediverx @kevinrenskers Unless they remotely toggle one random option left in there just in case that would force updates on everyone. Could happen, just saying.

@marcoarment @kevinrenskers Tim Cook's legacy was moving manufacturing jobs from the US to China, teaching them how to make complex products at scale, and how to install suicide nets. We should be glad he’s "destroying it”.

Oh, wait…

@richard5mith @marcoarment @kevinrenskers
I don't disagree with your sentiments about Apple but your comment about China was somewhat patronising. I'm really not sure China needs to be 'taught' anything.
@artemisworks I was referencing the Apple in China book which is specifically about this.

@marcoarment I’ll keep making this point: it’s time to stop purchasing new Apple products.

You can get whatever devices you actually need second hand if it comes to it, and Marco, you specifically have a big enough platform that if you advocated for such a boycott, it WOULD be noticed.

Stand on your principles. No new Apple hardware purchases until Tim Cook is no longer CEO.

@TheEjj @marcoarment the whole executive team needs to go,it isn't as if any of them need to work for a living anymore. They could all make a statement but they are either to craven or too corrupt to do so.
@marcoarment just bought a used pixel to install graphene. My family Apple ecosystem is over. No new purchases

@marcoarment

I never bought anything new from them. But "out of OS support" Apple-Intel are may favorite Linux-Machines.
Even my iPhone mini 13 is a refurbished one - but when this gives up - I will even quit the use of 2nd Hand iPhones.

The whole US TechBros are totally lost... and every single of their stock holders with them.

@marcoarment posts like this make me want to sell my iPhone and go back to GrapheneOS. I hope the Linux phone experience one day catches up to AOSP based projects. I also pray new OEMs emerge offering ports, slots & removable batteries. The Punkt mc03 that’s forthcoming has a removable battery and meaty specs but no 3.5mm jack. Unsure about SD card slot. I wouldn’t want their wrapper OS but the hardware looks nice.
@andrew @marcoarment Almost all FairPhone 6 components can be replaced with just (un)screwing, including the battery. Has an SD card slot. Supports /e/OS, in fact, you can even purchase it from FairPhone or Murena with /e/OS preinstalled.
@danieldk @marcoarment I'll have a look at that. Thanks!
@marcoarment @kevinrenskers One thought experiment I recently did: It usually costs around 1$/day to have an apple device. Just add up the apple devices in your household and invest the weekly amount weekly into apple stock. Yes, this much money every week. Do you feel good now?
@marcoarment apple never stood for anything, they wanted you to throw out all your technology and buy everything new every year. since the mac classic. seriously, its been about consumerism since then.
@marcoarment I mean, not to put too fine a point on it, but Apple just had another record quarter. Also, making beautiful apps like Overcast for the App Store makes you a Cook regime collaborator, not a member of the resistance.
@marcoarment Ansolutely. Steve Jobs is rotisserieing in his grave.

@RoguePlayer Don’t deify Jobs. He likely would be doing it, too. Any public performance to keep Apple from having to feel the effects of Cheeto’s “policy of the hour” whims.

It’s “protect the company” BS. All the tech CEOs are doing it. Which is legitimizing Drumpf’s behavior even more. It ain’t good, but at this point, claiming things about Jobs is ridiculous.

At this point; all the tech CEOs are terrible. #BanBillionaires

@marcoarment I’ve decided that (save some serious turn around) I likely won’t be buying another iPhone. Need to sort out what I’ll do when my AirPods give out.

@marcoarment

Close? lol.

Tim Cook is full fasc enabler and Apple has been evil a couple decades now.

@marcoarment Not close. There. Limping along on a laptop I would have but refused to replace last year. Phones will also need replaccment in next few years. But just won’t Apple right now. Trying to figure out where to go!
@mikesaul @marcoarment I'm personally just accepting some jank and learning to live with e/os on an older unlocked Sony phone. At this point I think supporting apple isnt worth it so its a little rough but livable
@mikesaul @marcoarment been using the pinephone over a year and love it! currently running manjaro/plasma. can't recommend it enough
@secretparkinglot This looks interesting. They do say on their site that user must have some Linux experience and beta versions are for those with such.
@mikesaul apologies. Bias on my part. I tend to think of most people on here using linux already. But yeah, it would be a struggle without prior experience on the desktop/laptop. Best of luck, the phone space is such a dumpster fire these days
@marcoarment I need to upgrade my phone, still using my 13, but I just can’t get myself to spend money at Apple especially now. Tim Cook has to go.
@marcoarment Apple has a soul? Who knew?

@Mungencakes @marcoarment I could’ve titled it “Tim Cook sold his own soul to save Apple’s profits”. Maybe that would’ve been more precise.

But he damaged Apple’s reputation alongside his own. And I think calling Apple’s reputation its “soul” isn’t unfair.

@marcoarment @kevinrenskers I'm against anthropomorphizing corporations like the Supremes did in Bellotti and Citizens United and Romney when he said "Corporations are people, my friend."
@marcoarment
an old friend was arguing that people that boiught Tesla before they knew he was a fascist should not feel obligated to divest. ffs. people are just so lame sometimes.

@marcoarment

I have bad news about nearly every product they own for people that think like this.

Tim Cook is the literal architect of the supply chain that birthed factories with suicide prevention nets. Not sure being mad at Apple now means anything if you were still buying iPhones made in those factories 10-15 years ago.

@marcoarment at this point with that definition of fascist, you probably can't buy very much anywhere in the centralised financial world. The very money you use is arguably supporting a type of fascism. Let alone the products.

@marcoarment While I see Cook’s actions not as personal agreement and support for Mango Mussolini, but as “hedging corporate bets,” that doesn’t make it any better.

I’m due for a phone upgrade this year. I really hope Apple reverses course on their support for a trumped-up government before it’s time to buy.

@marcoarment The rich always bow to fascism. Always have. That you ever throught otherwise is the actual weakness we should be criticising here..

@marcoarment I bought a Linux laptop and haven't touched my Macbook for a few weeks now <3

One thing i didn't expect, is what a big relief it is, to be free'd from the constant useless macOS permission dialogs/requests (which i didn't even read anymore and just blindly accepted...)

PS. Of course these annoyances only happened for all software which you don't pay Apple for...

@marcoarment this is just how capitalism works. hell there still companies around that helped the nazis kill tonnss of people, the same countries that denied weapons for the spanish legitimate defense of the democratically elected govt helped rebuild those companies. the same pattern for chile argentin middle east. they rather have a global war or a dictator torturing and disappearing students and workers than relinquish power.

@marcoarment
It has already started in Germany

Just look at the #did or #dut hashtag

@marcoarment
The difference is that there are many other manufacturers of electric vehicles. Once people start considering Apple just as bad as Google/Android and Microsoft, there aren't a lot of alternatives.
@marcoarment I wish there was a better alternative to the Apple ecosystem for the folks building commercial software.
@marcoarment @kevinrenskers I just bought an android phone, tablet, watch, and tv device to replace my Apple devices. I’m done with Apple now.
@jeffrey I’m done with Apple, but can’t move to Google / Android because I do think they’re worse. That’s why I feel trapped :(
@marcoarment lmao you guys seemed to have missed their latest earnings
@marcoarment that resembles Europeans feelings about the brand USA/America these days
@marcoarment
Yours is the final app I have to give up if I’m going to leave iOS.
@marcoarment @kevinrenskers What is the alternative though?
@jramskov That is the million dollar question :/
