Okay, I'm calling it. Musk is an agent of the Great Filter, sent here to trigger a Kessler Syndrome and trap us on this planet.

@attoparsec TBF I'd trap us on this planet too
@attoparsec can we be sure that it's not already started with junk which is already in Earth's orbit?

Thereby saving the other residents of the Local Group.

@attoparsec @cstross

Orbital data centers? What a Boring idea.

@attoparsec i’m guess he’s given up on going to mars
@dr_a It's deeply embarrassing anyone ever took that seriously.
@attoparsec i suspect future historians will refer to this time as the rise of the apex con-artist.
@dr_a @attoparsec "If I can't get off this planet, NOBODY WILL! I mean, nobody else but myself was going to get off this planet in the first place, but it helps to have a visual aid to drive the point home."
@mast0d0nphan @attoparsec that would be the MO of an emotionally stunted man child with orders of more money than empathy.
@dr_a @attoparsec which is a bummer, I was stoked with his promise to die there.
@attoparsec i feel smart because i understood all of that
@attoparsec Since he claims to be an Iain Banks fan, though cleary missed the point, I’d say he’s an agent for Special Circumstances. The Culture has already decided we’re not ready for them.

@JamesPadraicR

No, SC are the good guys.

When a planet is ruled over by vicious, exploitative, authoritarian scum like the arseholes who own and rule this one, they intervene to help the majority overthrow them.

They are the anti-CIA.

Musk is just a deeply stupid, evil Earth human with the reading comprehension of an edgy teen incel who failed upwards.

@attoparsec

@kingsleybugarin @attoparsec I’d say it’s debatable that SC are the good guys, good intentions perhaps.
You’re too polite about Musk, who may be the sort of (semi)Useful Idiot SC might use to keep a civilization getting ahead of itself and causing trouble.
Maybe arrange for someone with big ideas to come along and screw things up enough to keep us planet bound for a few generations, and triggering a revolution among the masses who sweep away the oligarchs.
Wishful thinking.
@attoparsec It's the _only_ explanation for Musk that survives Occam's Razor.

@attoparsec

We all know how Elon Musk is going to end the world.

Why data centres in space will not replace terrestrial ones

There has been much discussion recently about putting data centres into space. The claims are that they can then access plentiful free power from efficient solar panels and do not need any expensive cooling because they can just radiate excess heat into space.

@attoparsec I originally joked that his obsession with Mars was just because he wanted to go home.

Now I'm thinking that his obsession with causing Kessler Syndrome is because he found out he's just as popular on his home planet as on Earth, and he wants to prevent them from coming after him here.

@attoparsec So... We are dead already, isn't it?
@attoparsec "They were careless people, Tom and Daisy—they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made."
@attoparsec He's literally insane.
@attoparsec Look on the bright side, a Kessler event involving a million satellites [plus everything currently in orbit] would probably block enough sunlight to slow global warming!
