I'm interested in getting a few Meshtastic devices to stay in touch and coordinate with friends if needed. I don't know much about the protocol and was hoping to hear advice on where to get started and any other recommendations. Would also love to hear personal stories or views on Meshtastic versus Meshcore.

Some friends and I picked up a few Heltec V2 and V3 nodes with Meshtastic on them. Thanks for the recommendations.
There's a bit of a learning curve, but I'm glad we are figuring that out early. My hope is that each of our local friends have a mesh device in their household and some experience with how to use it.

@docpop I've got a heltec v3, but I've been thinking I might look for an outdoor-friendly enclosure I could mount high up on my fire escape.

Which mode are you running?

@tedward I'm using a Heltec V3 LoRa 32. It's in our kitchen (first floor and in indoors) and working well. Lots of nearby nodes.

@docpop You're in the Bay Area, so the Meshtastic preset most people are using is MediumFast. I have set up a few nodes to serve a couple of areas, but there are thousands of people on the mesh doing the same.

@docpop There is a fairly active group for Meshtastic : https://bayme.sh/ and their settings get really wide coverage. I'd be interested in setting up a secondary channel where I'm more likely to just chat socially with people I might know better than "people who have meshtastic devices nearby".

@exkclamation my friends and I are still learning and setting up a channel. I'll let you know when it's set up and we've worked out the bugs.
