@swachter Ah, thank you. With that name to go on, I can see about doing something similar myself.
I mean yes everything is witchcraft when you get down to it
But I mark out a shape (or not) and use embroidery thread to create warp threads. I catch the undamaged fabric on either side and make a zig zag, spacing as closely as possible. Then I do the same thing in the other direction, weaving the needle in and out of the warp. Then adding other embroidery stitches as needed to tack the new fabric down or reinforce the edges - buttonhole stitch here for obvious reasons.
