I heartily appreciate both utility and beauty. Useful objects that are also beautiful bring me joy.

I'd never heard of sashiko until my therapist suggested I try it as a meditative practice. I loved the idea, and really like the look of the traditional patterns I've seen, so I gave it a try. I like it well enough to keep doing it, and made myself a sashiko thimble using a quarter, some scrap fabric, and a hair elastic.

But I find drawing grids to be both very difficult, and tedious enough to be a barrier.

So now I'm making a stencil. I've taped a piece of graph paper to an old thin plastic cutting board; the kind you can roll up, and I'm punching holes through it at the corners of the squares with an awl. I expect this would also work well using paperboard (the sort of thin cardboard cereal boxes are made of) and a regular needle.

I think making some of the tools I'm going to use is a helpful way of committing to the practice, so I'm more likely to keep doing it than if I just bought commercially available ones. Also, I get to enjoy making the tools.

Making the stencil is tedious, but I'm very pleased with myself about the idea, and I'll be happy to have an easier way to draw grids.

About building an experimental shed and getting answers...

In the last few days I built an experimental minimal shed with found materials: Old stones, oneway pallets, old- and natural wood. It's just for personal use. I like it, and compared to "visible mending" it may be an art statement, to build with visible old materials. I also did first real work with an electric mobile chainsaw.

At march 24th my 4 month long master project phase starts officially. In the last 2 master months the "Common Shelter" art construction site should happen. After building the place should stay a free trekking place, where people traveling by bike or by foot may stay for 1-2 nights in the shelter, or in a tent beside it.

"trekking place" may be just a meadow with an information sign. Every additional infrastructure like trash bins, drinking water, toilet, shower... are optional. Every official public trekking place is a win in germany, because we have such a low number of free public places for sustainable, fresh air tourism.

In the last mailings i send to institutions, asking for a place for "Common Shelter", I included the idea of building at one place and transport it to another. My shelter plan result easily fits on a car trailer and it is also an adventure to load it on it, with many people and just our hands.

Statistics about my quest for a place:

In 50% I still wait for a first answer.

25% are negative answers: I analyse it this week to work around the given reasons. I also think about doing personal visits to communal tourism offices, talking with real people.

25% are not decided until now, but it is still possible to reach a positive agreement.

In the nearby region between Bielefeld and Osnabrück people may apply for money from the GT8 LEADER program until april 17th. Über einen experimentellen Schuppen und das Bekommen von Antworten...

In den letzten Tagen habe ich experimentell einen minimalistischen Schuppen aus gefundenen Materialien gebaut. Alte Steine als Minimalfundament, Einwegpaletten, Alt- und Naturholz. Er ist nur für den persönlichen Gebrauch. Einen öffentlichen Shelter würde ich noch schicker bauen. Aber wie beim "Visible Mending", der sichtbaren künstlerischen Flickarbeit an kaputten Kleidungsstücken, kann ja auch das bewusste Bauen mit wiedergenutztem Material "Kunst" sein. Ich mag ihn. Auch meine Akku-Kettensäge habe ich erprobt.

Am 24. März beginnt offiziell meine 4-monatige Master-Projektphase. In den letzten beiden Master-Monaten (ca. Mai-Juni) soll meine "Common Shelter"-Kunst-Baustelle stattfinden. Danach soll dort ein dauerhafter Trekkingplatz bleiben... also ein Ort, an dem Radreisende und Wanderer*innen für 1-2 Nächte einfach im Shelter übernachten, oder daneben ihr Zelt aufschlagen dürfen.

"Trekkingplatz", das kann eine einfache Wiese mit einem Infoschild sein: Jegliche zusätzliche Infrastruktur, wie Mülleimer, Trinkwasserzapfstelle, Toilette oder gar Dusche, sind optional. Jeder offizielle Übernachtungsort ist ein Gewinn in Deutschland, wo es leider eine sehr schlechte Verfügbarkeit von kostenlosen, öffentlichen Übernachtungsorten für nachhaltigen Tourismus an der frischen Luft gibt.

Bei den letzten Anfragen an städtische Kunst- und Freiraum-Institutionen habe ich auch die Idee des Bau eines transportablen Shelters, ohne Folge-Trekkingplatz am Bauort, skizziert... Mein entwickeltes Shelter-3D-Modell "BiePal v001" ist von den Maßen und dem vorraussichtlichem Gewicht auf einem PKW-Anhänger transportierbar. Eine selbstgebaute Shelter-Hütte mit 10 Menschen auf einen Anhänger zu tragen, und später an einen dauerhaften Trekkingplatz zu bringen, kann auch eine spannende Erfahrung sein.

Konkreter Fortschritt bei der Platzsuche für die Kunst-Baustelle:

Bei ca. der Hälfte meiner Anfragen warte ich noch auf eine erste Rückmeldung.

Ca. 1/4 meiner Anfragen wurden mit Absagen beantwortet: Die Begründungen schaue ich mir diese Woche genauer an und entwickele einen Text, in dem ich versuche speziell auf die Negativ-Argumente gegen Trekkingplatz und Shelter-Hütte einzugehen. Konkret plane ich, auch persönlich in Gemeinden und den für Touristik zuständigen Ämtern vorbeizuschauen und das direkte Gespräch zu suchen. Vielleicht klappt das besser, als Online-Anfragen?

Ca. 1/4 der Anfragen ist noch in der Schwebe: Keine konkrete Zusage, aber sie ist noch nicht ausgeschlossen.

Spannend ist auch, dass es noch bis 17. April möglich ist, 80% Zuschuss-Förderanträge für Kleinprojekte bis 20.000 Euro, im Rahmen des LEADER-Förderprogram im Bereich "GT8" zu stellen... das ist ca. die Region zwischen Bielefeld und Osnabrück: "Gefördert werden Kleinprojekte, die den ländlichen Raum als Lebens-, Arbeits-, Erholungs- und Naturraum sichern und weiterentwickeln." -> https://leader-gt8.de/kleinprojekte-2026

He tenido muy parado el tejer/ganchillo (a ver si compro más lanas y retomo... también un día me he de subir la bici a casa y ver dónde le pongo/termino una de las labores que tengo empezada).

¡Pero hoy he zurcido #visiblemending, yuju! Un par de calcetines de la compareja que ya han ido a su cajón, he empezado con otro par míos a los que aún les queda otra sesión, y sobre todo la sábana bajera, que era la única que realmente se había ganado su puesto en la lista de tareas, por ser mucho más cara que unos calcetines y porque tenemos muchas menos copias redundantes.

Para la(s) siguiente(s) ronda(s) me quedará como poco acabar el par de calcetines que he empezado, y otro más, y una camisa. Bueno, pues cuando apetezca, porque todo menos la sábana llevaba muchos meses (¿años?) esperando, así que sin prisa.
