I hate “Smooth Scrolling” and wonder if this is because of my setup (Linux, Firefox, desktop keyboard, mouse/trackball - since forever) and it just works better on other systems (Win/Mac/Laptops)?

Do people generally like it? Why is it on by default (in various tools)?

@kommadieb

I find motion blur in games nauseating.

@kommadieb if the game renders at 30fps or is fast like driving, motion blur definetly yes, i'd only turn it off if i had a 240hz screen or higher and could render that fast or if the motion blur was poorly implemented

@jwtownshend my brain is so slow, I can interpolate 30fps to a smooth image in my head just fine ;)

Motion blur is definitely much less annoying than smooth scrolling, but I still usually disable it. For certain games, especially when on controller it may even work for me; but using a mouse everything that gets in the way of direct feedback disturbs me. (Written from a low-frame-rate monitor 👀 – and I still can feel the difference between 60 and 120, well 90 FPS 🤔)

Ok, so it does seem to be a me-thing. 20% against, majority liking it (the don’t-knows are probably likes, because you’d change the default if it would bother you).

@kommadieb

Heretical Windows user. I hate smooth scrolling, I turn it off.

@kommadieb I like it, but find the experience not as satisfying on my Linux machine. I think this is more about sensitivities not being quite aligned.

@kommadieb it's easier to keep track of where you were when your eyes can follow how the page moves, as opposed to when it jumps in one click. I use smooth scrolling (middle mouse click + drag) when someone else is also looking at my screen

Imo the single-frame jump is better when you're the one scrolling because otherwise you're waiting for an animation. It's always the same scroll distance (unless the site hijacked it 😡) so with a tiny bit of practice it's faster and you shouldn't lose track
