if i were to move macwright.com to a vps / caddy setup: what are people using for servers? i'd love to avoid google/aws. most of my readers in the us so i probably need at least one server there.
@tmcw I find Linode very good, and I've used them for many years, but I'm working on moving fully to EU providers anyway.
@tmcw DigitalOcean is what I'm using for such a setup. I have several Django as well as several Kirby sites running on a single < $10/mo droplet.

@tmcw Hetzner as of about a year ago. Best value I’ve found.
@tmcw if your website is mostly static you could have a VPS anywhere and put a global CDN in front of it?
@tmcw I used to be on Linode but moved to Hetzner. Absolutely no regrets. Their EU servers are slightly cheaper and they own / maintain the hardware there. They do have a couple of US locations as well. https://docs.hetzner.com/cloud/general/locations/

@mvexel @tmcw Also Hetzner here, very happily, VPS-es, Storage boxes, Big Iron, Load Balancers, what not, already 20 years! Great support as well..

@mvexel @tmcw yeah, Hetzner is definitely cheap, if that's what you're after. Their networking to other parts of the world can be a bit flaky in my experience, but not something you're likely to notice for simple web hosting.

I can also second Linode being a good option.

@tmcw I've been using Digital Ocean for a long time, and it's reliably boring. My single $5/mo server has been powering all services at billmill.org for about 11 years now.

It used to run nginx, now it runs caddy; I switched probably 5 years ago

@tmcw my caddyfile: https://github.com/llimllib/Newsite/blob/master/ops/Caddyfile

includes the configuration to proxy a digital ocean spaces bucket (their s3-compatible storage) to notes.billmill.org

@tmcw Hetzner is the best bang for the buck. I have a VPS where I run multiple services through Coolify and did not have any problems since years.
@tmcw go fully renewables with www.kualo.com or @krystalhosting .
