I got a lot of feedback when I posted videos of the Walmart delivery drones being very noisy. I think the laws of physics dictate that there’s going to be a certain about of noise, but that made me wonder if the motors could be modulated to make the propeller sounds sound like music 🤔
@jerry delivery drones thumping along to dubstep
@BabblingGeek I was thinking more like the 1812 Overture

@jerry

I prefer the old school ice cream trucks instead.

@jerry If you can make a 1541 drive play Daisy why not a drone? Surely we have progressed in 20 years!

@jerry it may not be good for the aviation part, but if one didn’t care about altitude I suppose it may be possible.

Easier would be playing music through a separate system.

@jerry legit, I wonder if they could be sync-ed in a way that cancel each other's noise.

@faraiwe @jerry I doubt it. The sound from each propeller would take paths of different length to observers at different locations.

(It *might* work for a single observer...)

@jerry make them play "it's a small world" over and over.

@jerry

Ride of the Valkyries might be appropriate piece 🙂🤷‍♂️

Luke could probably make this happen 😆

@jerry what do your local zoning laws say about how high you can build your permanent volleyball net?

@jerry Ride of the Valkyries would work nicely.

Zeeep zeeep zeep zeep zeep, ze ze ze zeeep zeep zep zep zep zep zeeeeeeeeeeep.

@jerry they can conceivably emit cointer-frequencies for sound cancellation, but I doubt Amazon considers that worth the investment. As it currently stands, you can hear it coming—and I bet that's a "feature" to them (branding, etc)
@jerry I suggest the delivery sounds used in the Hunger Games. Seems on brand.
@jerry You know about the musical Railjet from ÖBB (Japan also has some musical commuters), right ?
@Sobex I hadn’t heard that. I was thinking about the musical roads when the inspiration for this idea hit. I don’t know where they are at, but I have heard the people that live/work around them hate it.
'Do Re Mi' music as the train powers out of the station - Euro Gunzel

It’s normal for electric locomotives to make some kind of ‘buzzing’ noise as their accelerate, due to the way that power is applied to their traction motors. But the Siemens EuroSprinter family of electric locomotives make an unexpected sound – […] Continue reading →

@jerry By “music”, you mean “audio ads”, I assume?

@jerry In high school, I was interviewing for a science scholarship, and it was pointed out to me that "if you can hear it, you know energy escaped". So quieter drones can be more efficient drones.

I think the key is you need to transfer sufficient momentum to air to get the desired "equal and opposite reaction" -- if the air flow remains laminar, it needn't be noisy (but you might need more volume to keep the velocity of the air low enough).
