you’re right! it feels mostly awful to Go Online™, these days. the internet in a sad state, for reason after reason after reason. but there is a way to fix it; to trade the voidful howling for a quiet & joyful song.

here’s how to win the war for the soul of the internet, and build the Web We Want.

A Website To End All Websites | Henry From Online

How to win the war for the soul of the internet, and build the Web We Want.

a few months ago i had the immense privilege to speak about Websites at @webdevconf in Bristol — i've taken some time to improve on these ideas and build a permanent online home for the essay, which i intend to grow and improve over time 🤍

@henry Incredibly well done!

@henry @webdevconf

Luuuuuuv your website's style!

Stylish, beautiful UI, easy to read...

If html and css allow me to do this, I definitely have to learn them. 😍😍😍

Happy New Year and here to reclaiming internet. 🤘

@globcoco thank you so much, @globcoco! thanks for reading, and godspeed in your journey! :D
@henry thanks a lot for writing down your ideas and sharing them! And thanks for keeping alive #IvanIllich's thinking. I first came across #conviviality in the realm of the #commons and #degrowth. I like the application to the web. Strongly feel encouraged to finally built my own website. Last year came across #HTMLforPeople and refreshed my HTML skills. Shoutout to @bw #IndieWeb #SmallWeb
@henry @webdevconf thanks for sharing these thoughts, to remember what the internet used to feel like , where you would go on it to discover something, not just find the answer to your question i love to go on https://wiby.me/ that continues to host this internet.
Wiby - Search Engine for the Classic Web

Wiby is a search engine for older style pages, lightweight and based on a subject of interest. Building a web more reminiscent of the early internet.

@henry @webdevconf The design is sensational. (And so is the text, of course.)

@henry This is so wonderful. Thank you for writing this and sharing this little pocket of hope with the world.
@evenreven thank you so much, mate! thanks for reading 🤍
@henry oh that's beautiful! I agree with your conclusion, but I wonder what we can do to get more people to make their own websites. "Don’t get caught up in tooling and frameworks, just write HTML and get something online." may work a few times, but I know from experience updating a blog/portfolio that way becomes an annoying chore. I mean, we're competing with "type something on your phone and hit publish" here. A key reason for platforms existing is the ease of use.
@koos i totally hear you — i think this is more a philosophical solution. everything in life is chores, but some of those chores are very worthwhile. we're not looking for the most convenient way to do everything — like i mention in the essay, tools that enable creativity and autonomy are often gonna be labor-intensive. if you'll humor some lofty language for a second, the difference is one of mindset: life is labor, and it is a choice to love the work!
@henry homie, thank you for this banger
@closingtags thanks Dylan, and thanks for reading!

@henry huzzah! And not really very relevant but I made a site in the 1990s using the title of your heading .

Funny that the archive still works despite use of what another site lambasted recently about obsolete HTML tags (some functionality gone that relied on Perl cgi scripts).

@henry Bravo! Thanks for putting words to something I’ve been feeling for the past few years, and for the encouragement to venture out of the bunker and get back to the joy of playing with old school html. Perhaps I will…
@henry Fucking fantastic piece of writing, loved every word!
@henry A great work of art, thanks for this refreshing thesis as the year just starts!
@henry This is great, thanks for writing and creating it! 💖
@henry Love this so much.
Am also a big fan of EF Schumacher.
I met TBL once and he told me the Web was broken unless something was done. But I was a tech utopian. Until I wasn't.
I recently ran away to the Scottish Borders to leave it all behind. Today I was mostly pruning apple trees. But you've shown me things can be fixed. I'm hoping to ditch substack and migrate my things to more wholesome places..
I'm not much of a poet but your piece inspired me to write this...
