When Twitter collapsed, it was great to see the flood of friends, game devs and other come to Mastodon. Over the next 9 months a lot of them vanished to Threads, BlueSky or just left. I want to thank all people who are still on Mastodon and make it a wonderful place. You know who you are.
@grumpygamer thank you for being here!
@root42 @grumpygamer yes, thanks for sticking with this 😄
@grumpygamer mastodon has a humble game Dev following which is what I want to get into myself. It's great if there is a community out there for you. A lot of the bigger platforms have been extremely politicised which is great if you care about that sort of thing. But that's exactly why I like the fediverse more than any platform right now, I have control of what content I choose to consume and I don't get fed what the platform thinks I'll like
@grumpygamer What can I say, except, you're welcome...

@grumpygamer

i've tried to like BlueSky but there's just so much superficial garbage and practically 0 engagement on anything of technical substance.

i suppose there's a reason people on there block 56,000 different accounts

@grumpygamer Great to have you still here, Ron.

@grumpygamer when I ask people why they left it’s almost always the same reason. It’s this reliance on algorithms as an illusion of outreach. I’ve had more success on here in terms of social engagement than I’ve had on any platform. I’m no social influencer and I am not trying to be.

When I see people complain about the lack of engagement all I have to really ask is are you even trying ?

@64bithero
I feel silence here a lot. But I agree with you. Those people might be hungry for followers count , reach etc. Honestly, this is a better place to reach audience, coz of many instances & platforms from a single place. It really have that powerful potential.
So typical algorithm driven platforms made them to think that higher impressions & followers, reach etc means actual growth. They are simply misguided by the habits from those bad algorithm driven platforms.
#mastodom #fediverse
@grumpygamer took to mastodon and immediately embedded myself. I love this service.
@grumpygamer Thanks for enriching the experience!
@grumpygamer Thanks for enriching the experience!
@grumpygamer Thanks for being here.

@grumpygamer So much this. ❤️

Leaving twitter was hard, and I was mostly a reader and didn't post very much, I can't even imagine how hard it was for those more active. And having seen most people I followed be active here helped.

I can't imagine why one would want to go back after going through that process.

@grumpygamer When I see how Bluesky goes these days and how many people returned to the dystopia, thanks for staying with us :)
@grumpygamer It's weird how they have this need for centralized corpo crap

@hellomiakoda @grumpygamer

People go where they see their "friends" are. It's sad to see that so many would rather go to the corporate controlled ones, many of which are guilty of considerable damage to humanity.

@grumpygamer I used to have a Mastodon account back in the day, then i deleted it, now i came back because Meta randomly purged my Instagram account and rendered my Threads account inaccessible. And they destroyed years of my photo memories. Here i at least have an option to migrate.
More of them would have stayed if they hadn't clocked to the worst part of the 'verse.

@grumpygamer unfortunately the Twitter collapse was greatly exaggerated.

Apparently it still has significant traffic. I don't know first hand, because I never returned

@grumpygamer I'm on both Mastodon and ATproto, although more specifically Blacksky as I moved to one of their two general-purpose PDSes before bsky.social changed their ToS.
@grumpygamer you are that person to us mere mortals.
@grumpygamer Agreed. I lament how many left for Bluesky especially since it’s shaping up to be Twitter part deux.
@gedeonm @grumpygamer I suspect, in time, they’ll realize their error and meander back here.
@gedeonm @grumpygamer Honestly I don't think mastodon was ready in 2022. It feels so much more polished now, so I'm hoping we're better positioned for the pending bsky implosion.
@Andres4NY @gedeonm @grumpygamer people moving in now will still have many of the same issues because they are intrinsic to federation (gotta choose the server, nontrivial to find other users until their presence propagates), and Big Names (which are what really moves the crowds) will still dislike how this place is unwelcoming to people with inflated egos, so I have little faith in that a migration now will go significantly different —and I'm actually ok with that.
@oblomov @gedeonm @grumpygamer See, I have to disagree. They changed the signup process to default to mastodon.social to make it easier for the newbs, they're working on the ability to find other users through starter packs (though they hilariously failed to create a usable poll), and I don't think hostility to Big Names is what it used to be. Even the lack of alt text often results in someone doing it for them rather than a lecturing.
@oblomov @gedeonm @grumpygamer I also think that having servers sync threads when you click on them makes mastodon a much less lonely place, too. I click on a toot and like it, and within a few seconds it goes from 2 visible likes to 25, and I can see all the responses.. so rather than looking like a ghost town, I can see a vibrant community of people conversing, and follow people whose responses I like.
@oblomov @gedeonm @grumpygamer Now if they could just hire some proper UI/UX people.. and also improve moderation..

@Andres4NY @gedeonm @grumpygamer but those are conflicting requirements. Dumping every newcomer on mastodon.social makes moderation massively more difficult (there), and redirects resources that would be better spent at improving the software towards management of the “flagship” instance, which is *already* too big for their own good *and* for the good of the Fediverse at large, for example.

Similarly, while new features like backfilling of comment threads are “universally good”,

@Andres4NY @gedeonm @grumpygamer

other like starter packs or feed gamification (“trending posts”), which may be good to cater to Big Names and clout chasers, are also destructive for the kind of spread-out, organic growth and interaction building which is one of the main factors contributing to making this network less toxic (to many) than the commercial ones.

@grumpygamer Thank YOU for being on here, very much appreciated 👏
@grumpygamer I'd use Mastodon a lot more if it was as easy to find relevant content as it is in BlueSky.
@grumpygamer I love being on Fedi and I love that you're on Fedi.
@grumpygamer I'm glad I could follow your devlog here and I had the honor to have the game I've been working on announced the same day as yours!
Great stuff mastodon. Very peaceful and intimate.
@grumpygamer Thank you for being on Mastodon! I can’t understand why the other complaining about Twitter/X but using Threads, Bluesky, etc. It‘s all the same. Mastodon and the Fediverse makes the difference
@grumpygamer People who left Mastodon for Threads are probably the same people who don't put their shopping carts in the cart return.
@grumpygamer I'm glad you are here so i can follow you now. Thank you

@grumpygamer

This is the future. They don't realize it, but open source, federated, off-grid even, is the future. Meshtastic. Etc. We're going to be rebelling against these corporations from the inside and out. The boomers are retired. The GenXers are burnt out, it's our time to make changes.

@grumpygamer I'm still here. Though I'm very active on Bluesky,but left both Instagram and Threads.
@grumpygamer A few weeks ago Jason Schreier was talking on Tripple Click how odd it is to be in a time where you release a new game and noone has heard of it.
Not us folks on Mastodon. Thanks for being here!
@grumpygamer I know this isn't the best place to promote a product or build a following, so I get it... But I *like* it here. I like the model (even if I am still on Mastodon.social) and it just feels different from so much of social media.

@grumpygamer

The moment one tries to download media from a post or send a link unencumbered, without profiles, blocks, or app download ads in Threads or BlueSky, is the moment one realizes they are not free to do as they want.

@grumpygamer Took me way too long to realise you were on here. Happy to follow what shenanigans you're up to. :)
@grumpygamer Likewise, very grateful for everyone who's sticking around and actively making fediverse a better and more welcoming place to be!
@grumpygamer Mastodon's architecture is unique because it's designed to endure rather than follow trends. People who left here for elsewhere will return when the tide shifts again.

@grumpygamer I joined Mastodon after I was fed up with Twitter. So far, I love mastodon and fedi.

Form me, the hardest thing is getting my leg over the threshold -- I wanted to run my own instance and the docs were quite confusing. Also, the federation mechanism is confusing but luckily I had a friend explain it to me.

The other issue was that I knew a lot of people on Reddit, and that was hard to leave. I ended up convincing some to move over.

I ended up deleting my Reddit accounts.

@grumpygamer to me at this point is freedom from algo. I don’t need someone else to push content down my throat.
@grumpygamer I don't know why, but other places don't feel as human or organic as mastodon.
@grumpygamer 🤔🤨😵‍💫😳😏😜

@grumpygamer

I mean, it's difficult to be on mastodon sometimes, people here can be gatekeeper assholes, moralists etc.

@grumpygamer thank you.

What I tried to build forever

@grumpygamer

Threads and Bluesky just feel more like Twitter than Mastodon does, which is why I think most people who came here left to go there.

This is also the reason I'm here and not that. I don't want to be on Twitter.
