Imagine a social network that can’t be bought, sold, or controlled by a billionaire.

A place where communities govern themselves, and your data stays yours. That's Mastodon. Join us in turning that vision into reality.

projects on FashHub get half the respect

@Mastodon It's time to redirect registrations to show the power of decentralization.

@Mastodon For those on the fence between Mastodon and Bluesky, see this 2024-11 article by @cwebber comparing their two architectures. https://dustycloud.org/blog/how-decentralized-is-bluesky/

My summary: Bluesky is an improvement upon Twitter but not decentralized due to cost: servers need datacenter-level compute and storage to collect and integrate all messages. In contrast, you can run Mastodon in a closet since it's more like email: each server is only obligated to push messages to recipients from those they follow.

How decentralized is Bluesky really? -- Dustycloud Brainstorms

@Mastodon you sound too much like mozilla right before their downward spiral, saying “look how much we care, please donate” while making the choice to compromise on the very values you claim to champion

want to prove me wrong - do something about the size of mastodon.social

@zaire @Mastodon

Nobody forced people to click on join mastodon.social instead of pick another server

@ismailghedamsi @Mastodon Do you have a human brain?
@ismailghedamsi @Mastodon To elaborate: you’d think it would be obvious that the highlighted button, positioned first, attracts more attention; and that’s a choice. Even if it was a 50/50, having that button there at all is a choice to funnel a majority of new users down a centralized hole
@Mastodon Decentralized networks reduce single-owner control, but governance, moderation, and funding still shape outcomes. Mastodon shifts power across communities, not away from trade-offs. How transparent are decisions and data practices across instances?
@Abel González what does this mean?? transparency of decisions across instances?? every sysadmin is the king/queen of his/her own instance. everything beyond this has to be discussed ...
@jabgoe2089 You’re right: each instance admin sets rules and can change them. By “transparency,” I mean whether those rules, moderation practices, data retention, and funding are clearly documented and communicated, and whether there’s a clear process for changes and disputes.

@Mastodon Fixing the message for you

Imagine a social media where you have control on what you see on your front page, do not promote toxic content that push people who fight and insult each other. Developed by passionate people who will not remove features you like for profit

@Mastodon there's so much more on the #fediverse
The fediverse is so much more than only mastodon
@Mastodon You know what billionaires *hate*? Things that can't be bought by a billionaire.
@Mastodon pleas #johnmastodon for his wonderful gift to society
@Mastodon Imagine a social network where write only accounts (like you) get muted because people are simply not interested in that kind of one sided communication… 😘 #mute

@Mastodon You guys have a competitor in Nostr, which does similar, but implements Bitcoin payments through the Lightning Network.

Unlike your product, which allows de-federation, it's impossible to do that on Nostr.

@Mastodon I would love to donate by purchasing merchandise but everything on your site is unavailable
@Mastodon Это все конечно хорошо, но когда Mastodon начнет улучшать свою функциональность?
@Mastodon I'm putting a proposal for a grant to my local council for them to run or fund running a local server. Would be great to have "official" mastodon support for that grant app. Spreading the fediverse and opensource knowledge to more people.
