I know a few people on here as well as myself will FEEL this cartoon.

@LillyHerself Okay, but I do that and I'm not that old...

(Remembers I'm turning 45 in 8 days)

Oh wait. shit.

@pandora_parrot @LillyHerself I just ask my knees about my age. Can't pretend I understand the creaks, but they do differ.
@LillyHerself All it takes is ONE TIME needing something, remembering that you saved that thing, being able to find it, and having it actually work, to be doomed to a lifetime of saving every "perfectly good" thing you don't need any more.
@philipbrewer @LillyHerself I used to be the go-to person for cables and weird old hardware in the Biology Department. Then they moved me into a much smaller office and so I spitefully threw out all of that stuff. Afterward, people would come to ask if I had this thing or that thing and I would say, "Ya know. I *used* to have one of those, but they moved me into this smaller office and I didn't have the space to keep it."
@philipbrewer @LillyHerself A few years ago I was asked if I knew anyone with a PCMCIA modem card.....
Give me 5 minutes.

@LillyHerself

[X] I'm in this picture and I don't like it

@WesternInfidels @LillyHerself

[X] I'm in this picture and I LOVE IT

@LillyHerself @futurebird This has happened to me. I found a cable in my box that I needed at work and saved the day.

@christopherbrown @LillyHerself

mmm hmmm how big was the fish again?

@futurebird @LillyHerself About a 3 ft, coaxial RCA cable. Honest.
@LillyHerself … wait, does this mean I’m someone’s father 😂
@LillyHerself My entire circle of friends can relate to this cartoon.
@LillyHerself oh yes. What about a 1996 SCSI ? And of course parallel printer cables , from times when Linux Distros used lpd as standard...
@Reinald @LillyHerself or even one of these?

@annehargreaves Wow, that looks almost (Nicolai) Tesla era!

@Reinald

@LillyHerself @annehargreaves @Reinald
Well... That could come in handy for sure...
Really think I need to add one of those to my collection of recovered electronical bits that just might come in handy.
@Reinald @LillyHerself yep, got these... Plenty of. Sadly for some, it's the card ((E)ISA or PCI) I am lacking.
For example to backup that UW-SCSI 4gb Hard drive sitting on top of my desk since... (Ouch...) that may still contain... something...
It's such a nice paperweight though.

@SuperDocteur It's the aspirations that count, n'est-ce pas?

@Reinald

@LillyHerself @Reinald let's say that I still have got quite a few former vital "things" on my desk...
@LillyHerself @Reinald I keep them just as a self reminder that memory used to be scarce and even now should be wisely used.
@SuperDocteur Ohhh, the big ones! Used to have those at work :-)
@LillyHerself Oops. I think my kids will recognise me....
@LillyHerself I still have a 13W3 to VGA adapter.
@LillyHerself I was here just a few months ago and good luck wiping the smug off my mug. I think it's stuck.
@LillyHerself I am unsure if I feel attacked or seen.
@LillyHerself I feel a bit called out here… 🤨

@LillyHerself

NEVER throw a cable away. You just never know...

@sleepy62 I may soon need a second house for my vintage cable collection.
@LillyHerself I didn't have this problem, my Atari 2600 was working with only one RF cable, I remembered how happy I was when I realised I didn't need the switch TV/console box and I can just put the cable straight in the TV antenna plug.
@LillyHerself i do this but i use *cable ties* so i can search the box more efficiently!

@LillyHerself So, for the total solar eclipse of 1999 I got my parents (I was only 17 then) to make vacation plans so that we would be on the path of the totality. We got the glasses, took the car, and found a place outside of town. Even though the weather wasn't perfect, it was an incredible experience.

Fast forward a couple years. I left home. Partial eclipse of 2022. We talked about it coming up. My father opens a drawer. Pulls out the eclipse glasses, without searching or rummaging.

@LillyHerself But! the picture seems to be an iPod-Dock to USB-A. Though I happen to have both.
@LillyHerself My fw ad da converters still sound great and are still rock solid. Not sure why I'm holding onto these SCSI cables though.
@LillyHerself the vindication is strong ... but paying $30+ retail for a cable you knew you'd seen kicking around the house at one point is a sting that lasts a long long time - I think this is more likely the main reason everyone has a cable box ... with a side-order of the universal immediately-finding-the-thing-you-just-bought-the-replacement-for ...
@mherbert Remember how in the Olden Days you would get about 15 different cables and connectors with a new Mac?
I wonder who went and told them they could NOT do that, and then charge an arm and a leg for them instead?
What a spoil-sport!
@LillyHerself SCSI was the bane of my professional existence for a long time ... so many variants ...
@LillyHerself I'm in this picture and feel vindicated
@LillyHerself I never stopped using FireWire audio interfaces!
@LillyHerself I did this a few weeks ago. Kids were making a racket, and I wanted to watch a movie in peace. Remembered that I could hook headphones to the TV, but the cord was short... Remembered I had any audio extension cable/coupler from 20 years ago when I had built my own PVR. I had relocated my bin of cables downstairs just a week before. Success!
@LillyHerself I had exactly this scenario a few weeks ago as Jr #1 and his mate were putting together his first computer. The Drawer That is Rarely Opened was opened. If memory serves a SATA cable (easy), a molex splitter and a PWM fan cable splitter were required. The drawer delivered. Thanks, drawer!
@LillyHerself Some people wait for this all their lives and never get the chance.
@Szescstopni That's your "human condition" for you...
