Federation isn’t just a feature, it’s how we reject oppression by design.

In the EU, Big Centralised Tech is facing fines for selling verification and hiding ads. At Mastodon, we’re building something different: a space where no one buys influence and there simply aren't any ads.

Checks and balances are our foundation, and kindness is our compass. 🌈

@Mastodon You guys get an annual donation from me, for doing absolutely bang-up work making a wonderful social network and experience. It'd be nice if I could donate through an open-source payment platform!
@Mastodon i love rejecting oppression by design too. have you tried closed registrations so to keep obvious nazis out?
@malicethegray @Mastodon Block nazis. Create your own Mastodon instance and close it.
@parigotmanchot @Mastodon this guy enjoys having nazis in his instance
@malicethegray @Mastodon Why not blocking it then ? Just to piss him off ?

@parigotmanchot @Mastodon

you. you are the guy who likes nazis in your instance. you're telling me "block nazis" (which i do), you should be telling mastodon.social to block nazis too

@malicethegray @Mastodon I agree Nazis should be denied a platform but there's different strategies a community like Mastodon can take and some can actually harm the community itself so I think the real question is 'how do we design tools for closing the site to Nazis, without locking out the people we need?'

@Mastodon Nonsense! There certainly are ads. Lots of them, all kinds of. But you can’t pay to force your ads on anybody who does not want to see them.

@fubaroque @Mastodon

Exactly, Ads are not bad per se. They are ok, as far as they are not forced on users.

@elCelio @fubaroque @Mastodon Indeed. We need language to distinguish “ad” from “content forced into stream” but I have not thought of a concise way to describe the latter.
@MartyFouts @elCelio @fubaroque @Mastodon I'm developing an open source wiki for all ideas for any problem with anything and we very much plan on using it cultural things like holidays and creating/voting on new words. Would you or anyone else like to hear more?

@Mastodon

messages like this are why I'm on Mastodon, where I love it, and plan on staying forever

@Mastodon Mastodon is officially recommended by the VLC 2.9 Foundation for THOSE WHO KNOW.
@Mastodon
Support your local Mastodon instance every way you can!

@Mastodon Federation is pointless for networks where an instance has way more users than the rest: it becomes a target for governments and baddies.

Until it's taken care of, this toot is just a weak donation plea. Mastodon.social should no longer get recommended by any Mastodon client or website (I would say it should even close new sign ups too) and people should donate to their instance admins instead.

@Mastodon how do you figure? Fedi blocklists exist, where’s the checks and balances on those?

@Mastodon

Mastodon.
It’s not ad-free because it’s premium.
It’s ad-free because ads are the worst.

@Mastodon I really like your work and I want to help you If I could.

@Mastodon glad to see some messages straight from the org itself, my experience with the fediverse has been a little nebulous so far but,

I just wanna say thank you so much for creating an alternative to corporate social media which plans on creating a future where entire populations can be exterminated, for profit, like the Palestinians, and no one will hear them scream.

That is quite seriously the world these people want for us and we will never be safe until they can no longer control

@Mastodon what everyone else can see.

I've heard people have been getting ideas for improving upon activitypub, to create a 'fediverse2.0', what're your thoughts on that?
