Elkjøp, likely the largest Norwegian based electronics store, is now running ads for Copilot where they speak about how great Recall is. Likely the ad is paid for by Microsoft.

They show the picture below and they talk of how great it is that the machine remembers everything you have done with it (and has the pictures to prove it!).

I guess when you make something that most people do not want, you just push it harder.

Remember that you have a choice to move away from Big Tech.

@jon I was thinking of visiting that place the other day.....armed with a usb filled with an linux iso.... 🥳🫣
@dalstroka @jon Ok, ok, can someone make a Linux installer that shows a generic Windows UI while running…? :P

Looks like windows, made by a former Microsoft dev

@jon I'd give it a try, when it isn't in Big Tech hands anymore.
@jon I suppose you would agree if this new key could be mapped as a shortcut to run Vivaldi (if not already running). 😉

@TritTriton

To be frank, I think a key placed in this location should not be tied to any certain app by default. If a user decides to map the key, fine, but overall I think a key like that is best for things like ALT or CTRL, which is what it normally would be used for.

@jon Microsoft often uses the rule that if people don't want specific feature, the company is going to push harder and harder with it as long as shareholders are not upset due to losing money.

@jon I have a work laptop with that copilot key.

Fun fact (not): The key replaces right ctrl key. It cannot be remapped in Windows 11. It can only be disabled by forcing a remapping of the key using PowerToys. So I now have a non-functional key, which is still better than having a copilot window opening on a misclick. Yes, it is the only key on that keyboard that cannot be remapped.

They are pushing so incredibly hard.

@plantagolabs

Indeed. Clearly when you place a function in a location where users will likely hit it by mistake, you have gone too far. IMHO keys should be programmable in general.

@plantagolabs I depend on the right ctrl key as I use it as the compose key on Linux. I'm uncertain what my work laptop has as I use an external keyboard most of the time. It came with Win 11 at least, but I removed that on my day 2 in the new job and installed Linux. 😁

@jon

@veronica @jon Ah yes, on Linux it can probably be remapped. The key is fn29 I think. It is a windows 11 problem. But my laptop is a work laptop, so I don't get to choose, sadly 😞

@jon And yet, I'm still having 100% of clients who request anything to do with #CoPilot or #Recall request I uninstall both and block CoPilot in their web browser too.

If people will not pay to use a feature, but will pay not to have the feature, then it isn't a feature.

#AI

@jon I loathe that key, and Microsoft apparently expected this reaction, because they made damn sure to make it impossible to remap to Ctrl (instead of sending a single scancode like every other key on the keyboard, it sends a macro, so you can't use it as a modifier).
By way, don't you think it's time to develop the greatest browser ever, for Sailfish Os too?it would be really nice to have Vivaldi on it :)
