🚨Starting Dec 16th, Meta AI will read your private messages - unless you opt out now! 🚨

Opting out is hilariously complex, but we've got you covered:

1. Go to Meta Privacy Center on DESKTOP
2. Privacy Policy
3. Other Policies and articles
4. How Meta uses information for generative AI model and features
5. Your right to object
6. Learn more and submit requests here
7. Tick: I want to object to or restrict...

Oh, and @noybeu is already on it: https://tuta.com/blog/noyb-meta-ai-is-it-legal 🍿

@noybeu Oh, and on WhatsApp, you can't even turn it off... https://tuta.com/blog/how-to-turn-off-meta-ai
How to turn off Meta AI in WhatsApp? You can’t, but... | Tuta

Noticed an AI assistant is now in your WhatsApp? Meta’s AI feature is now being rolled out in the EU and you can’t turn it off – but you can stop the AI invasion by opting for privacy-focused alternatives.

Tuta
@Tutanota @noybeu So they're not even pretending they can't read WhatsApp messages?

@Tutanota
You forgot #DeltaChat, which is an excellent alternative to WhatsApp.

@delta

@tekhne @Tutanota @delta we should not use the word 'alternative' and should use 'replacement' instead. 'Alternative' acknowledges the reasonability of its existence. WhatsApp is unjust and should not exist.
@Tutanota @noybeu So the only thing we should do is to boycott WhatsApp and switch to XMPP, @matrix or @delta .
OMG, but they did offer e2ee on WhatsApp right?
How can e2ee texts be retrieved to train models🧐
@Tutanota @noybeu ... and if you do all that, they'll just refuse your request anyway.
@openwarfare @Tutanota @noybeu
I left Facebook way way back because they messed with my privacy settings too many times. From all I've heard things did not get better for those that stayed

@Tutanota @noybeu thanks for the heads up. Here's how to do it on mobile:

- Navigate to Privacy Centre. On Facebook this will be under "settings and privacy". On Instagram this will be under "settings and activity"->"more info and support".

- In the privacy centre, search for "more detailed information about meta's generative AI models" and select it.

- Scroll down to "Your right to object", open and click "Learn more and submit requests here" which open the objection form.

- Do note that this form asks for yet more personal information about you, rather than just linking your objection with your account :/

@davetortoise @Tutanota @noybeu

Interesting - that’s not an opt-out; it’s an objection and a statement of “we’ll attempt to limit based on information you provide us.”

I’d also be curious if this covers WhatsApp.

@alatartheblue @Tutanota @noybeu yup, it's pretty scummy. I'd imagine it only covers whatsapp if a person has linked their meta account to it (I haven't)

@Tutanota @davetortoise @noybeu

I don’t use meta or WhatsApp for any type of messaging (or anything, actually), but I know a lot of people that use it almost exclusively.

@Tutanota @noybeu This only tells them you don’t want them to read your private messages. It is not a technical solution that prevents them from reading them.
@ahltorp @noybeu True, for that you need to get off Meta.
@Tutanota @noybeu You may want to clarify these instructions only work in the EU (GDPR) and possibly the UK. There is no right to object in the U.S. version of the site since the country has no national data privacy law.
@BreakBadventist @noybeu Which makes it even worse...

@Tutanota Care to specify where in their announcement they state that they’re going to start using PRIVATE messages to train AI (effectively breaking end-to-end encryption)?

Because from what I can read on your own blog post and on their announcement post is that they’re going to use PUBLIC data and interactions with Meta AI..

@Tutanota @noybeu I feel sick why people still using Meta… Someone keep attacks on Deaf family on Meta it is very dangerous.

@Tutanota @noybeu

I don't use Meta, but this looks like the location of the plans for the demolition of Arthur Dent's house, "..on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying 'Beware of the Leopard'."

@Tutanota @noybeu
Maybe going to
https://www.facebook.com/privacy/genai
short-circuits some of those steps?
How Meta uses information for generative AI models

Learn how Meta uses information for generative artificial intelligence, generative AI models.

@Tutanota @noybeu Meta has been reading everything since 2015. If you have a Meta app on your phone, they started their straight spyware with FB Messenger.
@Tutanota the suggested solution only actually works if meta AI already has your data and is displaying it as result of a prompt. It will not opt you out of anything. I tried 😅
@Tutanota Nice - your right to object isn't an option in Canada. Plonkers.
@Alison @Tutanota Took me a while to see it's not there in our region.
@scarpentier Yes I spent a bunch of time clicking around to see if I could find anything also. @Tutanota

@Tutanota @noybeu

There is a shortcut. Do not use.
