Do I know any #ebike #ebikes people?

After more than a year of debating it, I'll be joining the cult this weekend, getting a Portola for local appointments, errands, etc, instead of a second car we can't afford and wouldn't use often enough to justify the expense.

It's certainly not the ideal weather for it, but it'll only get better in the Spring and beyond.

@glecharles saving up for one myself. Hope you find more folks here!
@dasparky Yeah, even the Portola is a splurge despite being one of the cheapest good options. 🤞🏽

@glecharles I need to get one by March; sadly, there's nothing near me, so it's going to be a matter of praying the thing works out of the box.

(not feeling very optimistic, alas)

@herhandsmyhands Good ones aren't cheap and so many cheap ones are dangerous, it's tough to find the right balance. I think I found the right one for me, but wish I had the budget to get one from our local store so I could see it in person first. YouTube and Reddit were really helpful for identifying reliable brands, though.

@glecharles There seem to be a few reliable brands within realistic reach for me. We'll see how it works out.

And good luck to you as well!

@glecharles keep posting with hashtag ebike and you will :)

I'm almost 50, haven't seriously used a bike for 16y or more. Now I take my kids to school in close to 0C and high wind weather. I'm even doing the house shopping in it.

But then all those are sub 10km trips. Depends where you live. Good luck.

@mdione I'm in northern NJ so it gets cold but not unbearably so. It'll mainly be for avoiding Lyfts for short trips while my wife has our car at work, and replacing my regular bike for fun rides so hills aren't a factor anymore.
@glecharles just wear the appropriate clothing. All about the layers. Freezing rain and severe weather (lightning or 45+ mph winds) are the only times i avoid. Studded tires for the snow and ice make it a non issue
@glecharles If there's an option for it, get a big front basket. Makes small shopping trips so easy.
@vandenberglegs There is, but I started with the large rear basket and panniers instead. Don't think I'll need both, but we'll see.
