Update! I'm now the proud owner of a used sparkly black Ibanez Gio, a Katana:Go, cheap bag, and various picks for $340, from American Music. Dude was helpful and also gave me like $100 off the sticker price.

Heeeyyy Fedi!!! I have a question that I *know* a bunch of you are going to be able to answer.

For the past couple decades I've wanted an electric guitar, but my ex always shot it down. So, now that I've escaped that abusive relationship, and with it nearing the holidays again, I've decided I'm going to finally get one.

Last time I played guitar was in middleschool (and some bass in highschool), so I'm starting from scratch.

My constraints:
- 6 string electric guitar
- under $200
- used/hand me down is great
- pink would be awesome
- probably right-handed (because that's what I learned on)

Does anyone have a recommendation (or better yet, an old guitar near Seattle that could use the sweet, sweet love of a new owner?)

#AskFedi #ElectricGuitar #Music #Recommendations #RepairReuseRecycle

@alice Look at the Fender Squier series. They can be very good quality for the money
@alice Ah, wait: Did you mean "LEFT handed"?

@BackFromTheDud Yeah, this is my vote. Fender has a wide variety of options and the Squire series is a great entry level guitar.

Check local pawn shops and you're likely to find one for a reasonable price...Craigslist and the like.

There are a lot of people that used to want to learn to play guitar 🙂

It used to be that everything on a Squire was pretty easy to upgrade if you find that it just needs some tweaks. Not sure if that's still the case, but I can't imagine why it wouldn't be.

@alice

@BackFromTheDud @alice yep! i have one of these, and it's quite decent.
@cathos @alice I have a few, including 2 affinity series, which were the absolute lowest level at the time. In fact, my 2001 affinity Tele is still my favourite guitar

@alice @BackFromTheDud

Almost every one of my tracks has my Fender Squire on it. Great guitar.

@BackFromTheDud @alice seconding Fender Squier, that's the type of guitar I have! I got it secondhand from someone who didn't have the privilege of good maintenance, and I've had a couple problems with it*, but none that cost me more than $5 so far lol

*Missing a string, doesn't sound like a Guitar Type problem
*Plastic nut broke when someone tried to push a bigger string into where the high e should go with pliers, then the B string broke it more bc I kept playing before fixing it lol

@BackFromTheDud @alice the strings and pickups are rusty but they work just fine. I haven't actually broken a string yet, somehow, but again that doesn't sound like something that depends too much on the type of guitar. I got a replacement nut for $5, but if one was available I would've gotten a bone replacement for $10, which would prolly solve the problem if my broken nut has anything to do with the guitar quality
Seems more like a fuck up that I'm glad happened to a cheap guitar tho
@alice I know a fair bit less about electrics than acoustics, but I recommend checking out some at used instrument stores and possibly pawn shops. I'm partial to Fenders and Epiphones on the cheaper end, and would generally avoid anything that costs less than $500 new - but $200 used should be doable. I'd be happy to go music store browsing with you and show you what I look for!
@alice also, the most important thing to me is how the neck of the guitar feels in my hand. the shape of the neck varies wildly between models, and may be inconsistent between different years or runs of the same model.
@cathos @alice I agree that $200 used can get a pretty good quality guitar, but I looked up what my Fender would probably cost new and it's well under $500. It's not a *great* guitar, but it's certainly good enough that I briefly considered your guideline and then tossed it out once I saw the price of my type of guitar 😂 I think it takes a lot of experience with more expensive guitars to find issues with ~$300 ones, because I'm very fond of mine which would theoretically be ~$120 new

@alice cheap instruments are remarkably good now! If you're looking in the $200 price range for a new one you're comfortably above the "possibly trash" tier. Here's one I found on Sweetwater

https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/FocusVT211SHP--kramer-focus-vt-211s-electric-guitar-hot-pink

You can definitely find something better used, perhaps on Craigslist, perhaps in-store at a Guitar Center if they're not bankrupt yet. But that does require some knowledge to make sure you're not getting something broken. I'd recommend it if you've got some time to do research

@alice I was just thinking about getting one of these for an ex of mine.

@jef @alice

honestly the most rock and roll guitar ever

i want one

@clive @alice I imagine she would mostly use it to play Shonen Knife songs.

@alice When I was getting a guitar 5+ years ago, this channel was a neat find. A lot of this guys videos are relatively simple things you can do to upgrade a cheap guitar to make it play and feel better.

@alice I recently ran across a semi-hollow acoustic-electric guitar *kit* styled to look like a Gretsch for $200. It had a complete body and a separate neck, so minimal woodwork; mostly staining and lacquering. I didn’t look into it in great detail, but thought it was a cool idea.
@alice Squiers are great to get started. I have a Squier Strat which is good to noodle around on (I mainly play a P-Bass).

@suldrew @alice I concur that a new or used Fender Squier would be a great way to start.

Whatever you choose, go to a pro and pay for a setup – it can make all the difference between a tool you can learn with, and a boat anchor that will just drag you down.

Good luck, and have fun!

@alice have you checked reverb.com yet? I find lots of used squier models there for under $200 when I get the itch to look. probably a good shot at finding a cute Affinity Strat in that range, maybe even in your area if you're lucky :)
@sysop @alice came here to say this

@alice

Go to a pawn shop or check Craigslist (if you're in the US).

@alice Knowing what little I know about guitars, those starter sets could be very hit or miss. It’s likely to be made of less than optimal materials, won’t be overly durable and overall may not be fun. Neck warping is a particular concern with cheap string instruments. I especially wouldn’t get it from Amazon, as their store appears to be rife with fakes and knock-offs these days.

If you have instrument stores in the vicinity and feel safe going there, I’d have a look - sometimes they deal in second hand instruments. They’ll be more likely to sell you a decent instrument that has been looked after, set up properly and will last a decent time.

@alice for learning guitar my recommendation is to focus primarily on what is cheap and easily available. i would not recommend focusing on color/style at this point because (1) you might find you don't really enjoy guitar and (2) your idea of what you want is likely to change once you've tried playing a bit.

my advice is to go to a music store or pawn shop and try their cheaper used guitars and settle on one to use for learning. developing finger strength and callouses will be hard no matter which you choose so i would not recommend prioritizing something that seems "easy" although if you find one that feels good that's great.

once you learn to play you'll be in a better position to know what you want, and you'll also appreciate the upgrade a lot.

@alice
I don't have as much advice as I might have back when I sold guitars, because I haven't looked at entry level stuff in a long time, but I think I have some points that still hold up:
Above the bargain basement, garbage-tier instruments, most entry level stuff at reputable guitar shops will be decent.

Avoid Amazon, or any other big box and stick to a musical instrument store. Independent would be better than Guitar Center. Not super familiar with the Seattle retailers, but I've done business with Emerald City and Thunder Road in the past.

Used is great. If you don't have someone who plays to help you along, those indy shops I mentioned are usually good about making sure things play as well as they can before they sell them.

If you buy something used from a pawn shop, Craigslist, etc, getting a setup done at a decent shop is worthwhile. There are a ton of adjustments on a guitar and having someone who knows their stuff go through them can make a HUGE difference.

It's less of a thing than it was in the past, but if you get a shop that's giving you a shitty misogynistic vibe, tell them off and take a walk elsewhere... Not that I probably have to tell you that. Still, guitar shops are one of those places where that kind of shit can hide with a largely male clientele.

@alice have you tried any pawn shops? sometimes (at least around here) they have some decent guitars for under $200...

@alice https://reverb.com is a great place to shop for used equipment

Also, you might spend some time in a Guitar Center trying out different models to see what feels good in your hands

The short story - literally any guitar can be whatever you want! The pickups* are the only thing that actually change the sound on an electric

*The strings technically do, but that's basically due to their size and their effect on the pickups field.

@alice so basically - are you handy at all? Get anything you like and paint it the way you want, and drop some nicer pickups in it if you want a different sound!
@alice
If $200 isn't enough, maybe we could have a "buy a guitar for Alice" fundraiser :3
@alice
Adding my voice to those recommending a mom and pop music store. You’re more likely to end up with something you like and you are helping them survive another day for the next time you need them. Even for little things I go to one of the shops near me.
@alice
.
ah, I'm not that far away and looking to unload one, but it's brand name, I need more than that, plus shipping and customs. I don't think anything new for under $200 will be much good, I'd shop used - but that's my deal, and I fix them up, so I don't know.

@alice I don't think they're super common, but on the off chance you happen on one in a used shop like I did, I quite like this:

https://reverb.com/item/91923547-used-ibanez-red-gio-gax50-electric-guitar

I have a more upscale Ibanez that I got later too, and while it is of course nicer, I still play this one a lot and think it compares better than one might think considering the price. Stays in tune, feels pretty good.

Not saying you should seek this out above all others or anything, just saying I like mine. :)

@alice Local indie guitar store or Guitar Center would be your best bets.

As a new player, brand doesn't matter. Look for the cheapest Stratocaster knock-off you can find (nearly all radio-played, non-country music in the last fifty years was played on a strat).

Get a tiny, $50 amp and whatever pair of headphones which are the most comfortable for you.

@alice So I'm actually in a similar place right now, and I came across a guitar that I'm like 99% is the one I want. Squier Debut Series Telecaster. Currently on Amazon for $149.99 CAD. Not sure if there's a lefty variant but you can always flip it upside down like Hendrix :)

@alice
Can't help you with 2nd hand as too far away, but asked a guitar playing and - teaching friend and his reaction was "for the love of G sharp minor, tell her to not buy that crap, because it breaks by just staring at it. Detunes like hell, it should be forbidden to be sold. A good 2nd hand is her best bet."

Sorry that's all I have, but good luck hunting!

@alice theres a site for US second hand music stuff, i think it's called reverb or sth

@starlily @alice oh, is no longer discontinued! Yay! this is what I have and yes it is awesome.
@alice if you can't find one in a shop and have to buy off the internet, chances are a lot of the ones sold on Amazon are made in China and can be purchased on AliExpress for less.
@alice I went Yamaha Pacifica 112 V and Roland Micro Cube Guitar Amp (never upgraded as never got beyond absolute beginner); was years ago but still think they were a solid choice, and def. available second hand. Then stand, strap and tuner.
@alice see if you can find a squier affinity telecaster, they're really solid, playable guitars for not much and there's usually loads of 2nd hand ones about. the strats are good too, but not quite as good
@wav3ydave I'll +1 this, as my favourite guitar I own is a 2001 Affinity Telecaster. I also have a 1999 Affinity Strat, which is surprisingly nice to play and sounds quite convincing! @alice
@BackFromTheDud @alice i've got a 2003 (?) squier custom tele that i picked up for about £160 and it's without doubt the best £160 i ever spent
@wav3ydave I have one of those. The Dual Humbucker version, right? @alice
@BackFromTheDud @alice yeah with the P90s. it's a smashing guitar. i've ogled 'proper' fenders but it's so good i've never been able to justify it
@wav3ydave Mine is the H/H one, but yeah. I got a Squier VI bass. I didn't need it, I've never gigged it, but it looked cool AF and it plays nicely, after some work! @alice
@BackFromTheDud @alice i also desire one of them. and the 40th anniversary Jazzmaster
@wav3ydave I have a Squier Jazzmaster Baritone. In black on black. Again, I didn't NEED it, but DAMN it looks good!! @alice
@alice Have you checked Reverb? More focused on musical instruments than is Amazon.
@alice
When I got my first electric guitar, it was by going to the local guitar shop, and picking out a used one. Usually the people there will be able to tell you what exactly you want, and it shouldn't be too expensive.
@alice I toured for years with a 20 dollar guitar. I regret it. I now have a 600 dollar guitar. Something in that price range makes playing and learning much easier. A 200 dollar guitar (unless you get it as a steal of a deal from a friend) will hinder even a beginner's ability to play.

@alice

Yay, that's so exciting, what a lovely thing to do for yourself! I just bought a bass after wondering about it for like fifteen years 😁 my approach may not be your ideal but I'm happy to share.

I did read forums on what to look for, but I hadn't ever even touched a bass before so a lot of it went over my head. I went on ebay, and looked for adverts where the person wrote enough to convince me they actually played the thing and knew something about it. I didn't want anything that had been taken out of the box once and then sold on, because in buying from someone I was partly paying for their expertise in picking a decent bass, if that makes sense. Then I saw one I liked the look of and the seller had clearly played it a lot. I messaged him and asked for a short video of it being played. The guy was really nice about it, did it immediately, and my brother watched it for me and told me he didn't see any warning signs and it played well. I figured if there's nothing majorly wrong, I'm such a beginner I won't notice, so I bought it without worrying too much.

I don't know what prices are like near you but I paid so little that I could afford to just take the chance and see.

I'm excited to hear how it goes!
