I was curious how the state-by-state battle is going for minimum wages in the USA; here's what I found:
@codinghorror Pretty ironic to see such a wide discrepancy in something that's supposed to be the "minimum".
@codinghorror This is straight up theft!
@codinghorror it would be interesting to see this in relation to e.g. cost of living.
@oblomov excellent idea! Because that does vary a lot per state, but also per metro area... still, the state average would be very interesting.
@codinghorror (population median, preferrably, especially if there's large per-metro variation)
@oblomov here's the raw..
@oblomov might be better to just overlay cost of living or show them side by side, I dunno. Gotta sleep.
@codinghorror I'm distracted by "why is MA north of NH?"
@nedbat yeah, it's a bit weird and random, but welcome to ChatGPT (and btw only the pro model is any damn good at this)
@codinghorror It’s missing DC, which I believe would be a shade of purple.
@gregatron5 it’s in the notes text in the image
@codinghorror Thanks! I missed that before. I know it’s generated, but for DC it might also include “except for tipped wages,” which we’ve been fighting to eliminate for about 10 years now. Two ballot initiatives have passed and our council keeps not implementing them b/c of lobbyists.
