Remember that Nimarata Nikki Randhawa ran as Nikki Haley

Piyush Jindal ran as Bobby Jindal

Raphael Cruz ran as Ted Cruz

Meanwhile—Barack Obama ran as Barack Obama and Zohran Mamdani ran as Zohran Mamdani, and MAGAs accuse Dems of identity politics

Every MAGA accusation is a confession

@QasimRashid maggots live on lies
@QasimRashid There is also:
Kashyap Pramod Patel > aka Kash Patel

@cykonot @QasimRashid
Exnomination perhaps, but also reasons:

Nimarata Nikki Randhawa -> Nikki Haley
“Haley has been known by her middle name, Nikki, a Punjabi name meaning "little one", since she was born.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikki_Haley#Early_life. Family name is from her husband Michael Haley.

Piyush Jindal -> Bobby Jindal
“Jindal's nickname dates to his childhood identification with Bobby Brady, a character from the 1970's sitcom The Brady Bunch. He has been known by his nickname ever since, although his legal name remains Piyush Jindal.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_Jindal#Personal_life

Rafael Edward Cruz -> Ted Cruz
Ted is the shortened version of his middle name.

Kashyap Pramod Patel-> Kash Patel
Barack Hussein Obama -> Barack Obama
Zohran Kwame Mamdani -> Zohran Mamdani
People don’t always use their full names.

@cykonot @QasimRashid
And in the UK:

Sue-Ellen Cassiana Fernandes -> Suella Braverman.
“She is named after the character Sue Ellen Ewing from the American television soap opera Dallas, of which her mother was a fan, but Sue-Ellen was abbreviated to Suella by her primary school teachers.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suella_Braverman#Early_life_and_education. Family name is from her husband Rael Braverman.

Olúkẹmi Olufunto Adegoke -> Kemi Badenoch
Family name is from her husband Hamish Badenoch https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kemi_Badenoch

The Honourable Anthony Neil Wedgwood Benn -> Tony Benn
"In November 1960, Lord Stansgate died. Benn automatically became a peer, preventing him from sitting in the House of Commons....Benn fought to retain his seat in a by-election caused by his succession on 4 May 1961. Although he was disqualified from taking his seat, he was re-elected. An election court found that the voters were fully aware that Benn was disqualified, and declared the seat won by the Conservative runner-up, Malcolm St Clair, who was at the time also the heir presumptive to a peerage.
...Within two years, though, the Conservative Government of the time, which had members in the same or similar situation to Benn's (i.e., who were going to receive title, or who had already applied for writs of summons), changed the law. … St Clair, fulfilling a promise he had made at the time of his election, then accepted the office of Steward of the Manor of Northstead, disqualifying himself from the House (outright resignation not being possible). Benn returned to the Commons after winning a by-election on 20 August 1963." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Benn#peerage_reform

Are there more politicians named after 1970s US tv characters?

Suella Braverman - Wikipedia

@foldworks @cykonot @QasimRashid People don’t always use their full names, true. But if you’re a nonwhite politician in the West, going publicly by the name or childhood nickname that’s least likely to make white folks uncomfortable is still a choice. GOP pols do it all the time. But Barack didn’t run as Barry, AOC didn’t run as Sandy, and Zohran brought up his middle name Kwame at every campaign speech. Not hiding from the rich fullness of who they are.

@bluejay @cykonot @QasimRashid

Agreed. It might have been inferred that these politicians changed their names only before running for elections; there was bit more to it than that.

I didn't follow Mamdani’s campaign closely so wasn't aware of him bringing up his middle name Kwame at every campaign speech (I'm in the UK).

I haven't heard the UK politicians Badenoch and Braverman discuss their names and heritage much https://mathstodon.xyz/@foldworks/115547531392808511 except for Badenoch:

“Her mother Feyi Adubifa had travelled from Nigeria to the United Kingdom for medical treatment, and gave birth in St Teresa's Maternity Hospital. This was before the British Nationality Act 1981 abolished automatic birthright citizenship for those born in the UK; Feyi then returned to Nigeria shortly after Olukemi was born... Badenoch denied claims she was an "anchor baby" and asserted that her family did not know she was eligible for a British passport until she was a teenager… Badenoch spent her childhood living in Lagos, Nigeria, and in the United States, where her mother lectured … During her parliamentary maiden speech Badenoch stated that she was "to all intents and purposes a first-generation immigrant"” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kemi_Badenoch

@foldworks @QasimRashid exnomination wouldn't be motivating the politicians? This is kind of facile and beside the point
@cykonot @QasimRashid
Wasn't denying exnomination, was looking for some nuance and fact-checking

@foldworks @QasimRashid i didn't say you were? I meant that your "nuance" was shallow and missing the point.

And what fact were you checking?

@QasimRashid Let us not forget that Obama's middle name is Hussein. Woof, did that cause some agita back in 2008.
@roadskater @QasimRashid
His name is Hussein!

Glory to the only president we've ever had with a true knack for comedy. The only thing holding back his status as the greatest orator is the racism of his countrymen.
Obama Jokes About Middle Name "Hussein"

YouTube
@Jumpmed @QasimRashid Dunno about knack for comedy, but maybe. Lincoln was apparently well-known for his love of humorous tales. But long form, and not short and biting.

J D Vance enters the room

@QasimRashid I have no love for Rafael but at least he went by his chosen, middle, name.

That’s like going after William Clinton for using the name Bill.

@QasimRashid It’s only “identity politics” when you refuse to hide or soften your nonwhite identity to make white people comfortable.
