#MyFonts’ new EULA for desktop fonts came into effect November 7. For an article published by @typographische ([DE], now in revision) @typolis quoted an info about it sent by Monotype to foundry partners: “The Desktop License will no longer permit font embedding (except in the case of non-editable, non-commercial PDFs)”

@typographische @typolis Excerpts from MyFonts EULA for desktop fonts (2. License Grants):
• “Use the Font Software on such Workstations to create, edit, view, print and distribute materials, provided that […] the materials do not contain the Font Software embedded”
• “Create and distribute non-commercial non-editable .pdf documents containing embedded Font Software”

@typographische @typolis Excerpt from MyFonts’ FAQ about the EULA for desktop fonts: “distribution and embedding of the font is not allowed. Static graphics (i.e., ‘flat’ images that do not contain embedded fonts) may be distributed, but you may not distribute raw font files or files containing embedded fonts.”

Confused by MyFonts’ new EULA? I’d be.

For his Design Tagebuch article [DE] @achimschaffrinna asked the Head of Licensing at Monotype to clarify. Phil Carey-Bergren stated that the license still allows for creating and transmitting non-editable, print ready PDFs with embedded desktop fonts. @hitext specifies the term ‘non-commercial’ used in the EULA and FAQ excerpts quoted in my preceding posts: “For Monotype, commercial PDFs are documents to be sold (e.g. an ePaper).”

@hitext Mentioning @rainerklute and @gerritvanaaken who commented below @achimschaffrinna’s article. Thanks for the leads!
@grautesk I used to work as customer support for MyFonts and even with the old EULA, customers would email in to check if there intended uses was permitted. Feels like this new one is making it more complicated than it needs to be.
@Stuarthazley For a start, their understanding of ‘commercial’ and ‘non-commercial’ has to be included in the EULA (9. Definitions). The license needs a review but that alone wouldn’t have prompted me to write the thread. It were the misleading FAQ and that info.
