A question for men who used to have long hair but now wear theirs short: what prompted you to cut it? I'm really curious.

#AskFedi

Yes, the question calls for a song! 😂

I forgot how much I love this soundtrack and this song in particular.

And I'm supposed to be getting to sleep.

Oh no. 😅

@AdaraAstin OMG what a flashback trigger that was! I'm going to have that soundtrack stuck in my head all day! LOL

@AdaraAstin
in 1996 I locked my SF apartment door and tried to walk away, but I couldn't, because I had locked my ponytail in the door. on the spot I decided to cut it off, so I went to the only hair salon I knew back in Berkeley.

the woman who did my hair turned out to be very toppy ("keep your head down!") and that's when I discovered that I really liked that. so arguably I kept my hair short to have that experience more.

@datn This is magnificent!

You have set a high bar for all hair story tellers to follow, Dan!

@AdaraAstin Mostly, I fancied a change. There was an element of practicality too, long hair and moving engines aren't a great mix and it was annoying having to secure it out of the way. It was also just a chore to look after and took a long time to dry.

After a spell of short hair, I'm growing it out again. I fancy a change, and a longer cut feels like the right choice at the moment. For as long as I've still got it, I'll happily change my hair styles.

@vulgalour "I fancied a change" and "occupational safety" are two great answers!

I hope the grow out goes well.

@AdaraAstin honestly, I had a bit of a breakdown after my first marriage dissolved.
@byteback I am so, so sorry to hear that, Byteback. I hope you are in a much better place now.
@AdaraAstin haha thanks, world's away. Mistakes where made.

@AdaraAstin My partner and I had a deal - it was clear that genetics were going to catch up with me at *some* point in my 20s, and my partner (who loved my hair long) said "Some day, it's going to be Time, and I need you to not fight me. But I'll cut mine off the same time we do yours!"

Once the widow's peaks started to come in, it was Time. I'm not with her anymore, but in all honestly she was right and I was glad to have the outside opinion. I've kept it short ever since.

@chuckjeffries There's a lot of love in this story as well as wisdom.
@AdaraAstin just really wanted a butch lesbian haircut
@AdaraAstin Hair loss, basically. The hair on the top of my head started getting noticeably sparse and the front was struggling to stay long enough to put in a ponytail. I do really miss the way it looked before that, but I also don't mind the buzz cut I have now, especially how much more practical it is.
@robert42 I suspect this is a common reason. I'm delighted to hear the buzz cut has worked out to be practical!

@AdaraAstin I spent almost 30 years with my hair down to my waist, always in a pony tail.

My hairdresser who I had since I was about 15 was retiring and I had been wanting a change.

I figured she was someone I trusted and she did a great job.

I've since found another barber and she does a great job with what's left.

@ScotttSee Respect to you for the strategic thinking. You definitely want to make a major change like that with someone you trust.
@AdaraAstin children. Babies are hair pullers.

@AdaraAstin In college, I went from a cloud of curls that lasted about 5 minutes after I exited the house and became just a cloud, to a shaved head in one hot afternoon.

And I guess you can see my reasonings.

@adriano Hahahahah Yes, there's certain logic at work there.

@AdaraAstin I have long hair again, and the few times I've gone from shoulder or longer length hair to short has usually been something to do with taking care of my hair. (My hair is very curly and prone to tangle if not brushed daily when long.)

My beard goes from full to almost clean shaven 2 or 3 times a year. Usually it's shaved once it starts requiring major upkeep

@webhat Ah, so when your hair is long, you just wear it down?

I have only cut my hair (myself) once during the pandemic, but I tend to wear it in a ponytail, braid, or (most of the time) messy bun during the day to get it out of the way -- and prevent infinite tangles, too.

@AdaraAstin when is has just been washed it's a lush of curls and I wear it loose. And as the day progresses I put it I a ponytail. If I have the spoons I brush it with oil before bed and a can also wear it loose the next day.
@webhat I'm getting a mental image that is very Louis XIV!
@AdaraAstin that sounds accurate 😹
@webhat Have a great time ruling over your subjects at Versailles today!
@AdaraAstin I didn't like the long and balding look. Long good, but very thin on top and long just looks sad to me.
@LovesTha Some folks can pull that off well but truly it's a tough assignement.
@AdaraAstin yeah. Where balding, short hair, long beard is an easy look to pull off
@AdaraAstin as a student I had long hair. Kept it for a couple of years after, but then felt like I had to smarten up for work. Ditched the ear ring too. Thought I had to, to be taken seriously for a proper job. It worked.
@essjax It's a shame the world works this way, but for many of us, it does.
@AdaraAstin
I went mostly bald and I had sworn to myself when I was younger that I wouldn't be a pathetic bald guy with a few whisps of long hair pulled into a sad pony nub. I miss having hair for a number of reasons, but I save money on shampoo I guess 🙃

@intransitivelie You're not alone in this reply.

And seriously, here's to silver linings and saving money on anything!

@AdaraAstin male pattern baldness tbh
@smellsofbikes You are in good company in the replies. xo
@AdaraAstin Never long per se but, old age happens. And it suxballs.
@FeloniousPunk And yet it's better than the alternative.
@AdaraAstin pure laziness, honestly. Short hair is easy to maintain.

@chopsstephens Whenever someone called something lazy, my dad liked to reply, "Only a fool chooses to be uncomfortable."

Easy to maintain is a great thing!

@AdaraAstin I was a metalhead in my youth and wore my hair shoulder long, but that pasted as I grew up. Recently I started to notice a lot of guys my age getting bold and decided to grow my hair again just because I can (nature has blessed me with extra thick hair). I got it to my shoulders, but then cut it off because it's just too unpractical and the sweating is the worst.

@useravoiding I appreciate both the spirit of adventure at play here and the practical considerations!

A winter only project, perhaps?

@AdaraAstin Nah, winter is even worse because of central heating and the need to wear a cap when outside.
@AdaraAstin
First time: the military
Second: a breakup
Never had the patience to grow it again (because it looks shit between short and long enough)
