This sounds really innocuous, but Teen Vogue just axed their whole politics desk — everybody working on it has been laid off. This is devastating: it was a publication with a lot of reach and it was consistent in how it spoke out against this administration.

Teen Vogue Is Joining Vogue.com

The transition, in which Teen Vogue will keep its unique editorial identity and mission, fortifies the evolving Vogue ecosystem.

Vogue
@zeblarson The question is... where will those writers end up?
@Steve oof, in this environment? Not exactly wealth of journalism jobs even for people with strong credentials. Maybe there’s a cooperative newsroom to be founded.

@zeblarson @Steve

Maybe Teen Onion could become a thing.

@zeblarson @Steve Founding their own newsroom would seem to be the way to go. Teens can be very loyal, so they'd probably have an instant audience if they all popped up again in something new.
@zeblarson well there went the last newspaper on the planet
@zeblarson Strings were pulled, obv.
Shame, they were great.
@LillyHerself Yeah, fuckery happened behind the scenes.
@zeblarson if the Teen Vogue political desk formed their own media outlet I would seriously consider subscribing
@metaphase @zeblarson everyone likes a new media outlet, why not?
@zeblarson
Yep, there goes the last MSM with any teeth. I'm surprised it took this long.
@zeblarson Will help make Conde Nast more appealing to be absorbed into some right-wing billionaire's media empire.

@zeblarson

Do you have a source for the politics desk being axed? That press release doesn't say it explicitly although it is hinted at heavily with:

> As a dedicated pillar on Vogue, Teen Vogue will focus its content on career development, cultural leadership and other issues that matter most to young people, according to the publication.

@gbargoud From the former editor of the Politics desk and the (as of today) other former editor of the Politics desk. I worked with both of them.
@zeblarson @gbargoud the price of doing good journalism these days as It angers the overlords.
@gbargoud @zeblarson Ah yes, "career development", that thing that teenagers find so interesting and important.
@WAHa_06x36 @gbargoud Not to mention, in this dogshit environment what’s there to even write about? “Prepare for a fuckton of school that will leave you in debt? Hope there’s a job waiting for you when you graduate?”

@WAHa_06x36 @zeblarson

It has strong echoes of the Washington post opinion section's "We are going to be writing every day in support and defense of two pillars: personal liberties and free markets"

@zeblarson aww damn, they're some of the best journalists out there
@zeblarson it's ironic that I was having a conversation with somebody the other day and we were trying to think of a mainstream news outlet that hadn't bent the knee. The one outlet that was mentioned? Teen Vogue.
@allpoints Wired — but Wired is owned by the same parent company.
@allpoints @zeblarson fuck. Teen Vogue was one of the only publications doing actual journalism anymore.
@allpoints @zeblarson the 19th. @19thnews If they'd take them all and make a TeenTeam out of them, they'd fit right in and likely increase subscription base.
@zeblarson I don't think there's any way this count as innocuous.

@zeblarson

There was some rumor about Bezos buying Vogue, and I've been wondering what would become of the Teen Vogue politics for a few months now....

The political commentary coming from Teen Vogue was the only thing that I found interesting about the Vogue content.

I hope those writers find a new outlet and their followers go with them.

@blogdiva @lucyruthe I think that’s just rumor at the moment, but I wouldn’t call it unfounded either.

@zeblarson @blogdiva

I heard the rumor around the time of the all female space orbit featuring Bezos' wife. Like it was some present for her or something rather than another attempt to control the news/narrative.

@lucyruthe @zeblarson we should try to find an connect then with non profit business leaders who can help them get a real news org started. I’d crowd fund the shit out of that, their reporting was great.
@usspacenut @lucyruthe I suspect they’ll be in motion to do that already; the thing now are cooperative newsrooms and nonprofits. Hopefully they waste no time because we’ll need to signal boost the shit out of it.
@zeblarson they were a surprisingly good and consistent voice and I'm really sorry to hear this
@zeblarson Teen Vogue was doing some great work! They were reporting on issues that the legacy media should have been. This is just so sad.

@zeblarson Hopefully this pumps further vigor into the Gen Z movement.

#GenZ

@zeblarson
Saw that coming. Teen Vogue was one of the last vestiges of legitimate political journalism; it was never going to be allowed to keep that up.
@zeblarson The owners capitulated to Trump.

@zeblarson Huge loss. That was an outspoken department with a clear mission to educate the teens of today.

Terrible loss.

@zeblarson did Bezos buy it from Newhouse? or is this in preparation for selling it to him?
@zeblarson The last honest mainstream political reporting is gone.
@zeblarson Crap! Not only reduced, wholly axed. That's... something.

@ljrk @zeblarson

Fascism, the full service destroyer.

@zeblarson I don't see anything about the politics desk being laid off in the article itself. Where'd you get that info?

@zeblarson They were too strong for justice. I've thought that axe would fall sooner, we knew it would fall, but it's a shame to see it. Brava to all those folks who tried to bring truth to our young people.
@zeblarson NOT innocuous but hey, can they organize their own thing???? Or .... find another place 'cause they could bring followers and revenue. I'd follow. And revenueate.

@zeblarson

... and that's why they killed it: it was a young journalists training ground.

@zeblarson

As a dedicated pillar on Vogue, Teen Vogue will focus its content on career development, cultural leadership and other issues that matter most to young people, according to the publication.

Did a CEO write this 🙄
