The irony is, at least the old gods had targeted utilitarian purposes, instead of the one ubiquitous god that tends to attract many malicious people.

Now if the native gods were real, you'd expect the conquistadors to be plagued by bad weather and bad luck, and probably end up at the bottom of the sea.

@mike805 @The_Whore_of_Blahbylon hmm .. sure, they aren't real, but at least earlier civilizations created a framework that more straight-forwardly, more directly maps a god to a utilitarian purpose. Like, one could argue there is more agency and more purpose and more directness in their understanding of deities. Maybe their rituals did serve some dual purpose in that their stories of the deities captured "the things that worked for them for their purpose".
