I found the mention of the Reddit post about how Notion banned a person's account and kept their data, to be particularly interesting. 100% proves what I've always said about Notion, over and above the fact that it requires way too much initial configuration.

Here's the link.

@dhry I killed off my notion account a while back, and going to do the same for Craft. I just need to get off my ass and learn Obsidian.

@jarunmb Obsidian really isn't that difficult. It is wildly powerful with the thousands of plugins available for it, but the truth is that while you might have seen all the tutorials for it, NONE are needed. You don't even need to know markdown.

1) You can create folders on the left: right click → new folder
2) Right-click on the left → new note and boom, you're editing a note
3) Right click on folder on the left → new note, boom you made a note in that folder

That's literally ALL YNTK.

@jarunmb When I walked away from #Evernote I was looking for a replacement, this was years ago and #Obsidian was popular even then. I tried it, it somehow didn't “click" for me, and I used Joplin for about a year maybe. Then I randomly came back to Obsidian - I often give things multiple tries if I feel they deserve them, like #Jellyfin or my #AppleTV, and fell absolutely down the rabbit hole with it second time round.

It's absolutely indispensible to me. Could not get through life without it.

@dhry @jarunmb

What was it about #Joplin that didn't work for you?

@viharm @jarunmb Don't get me wrong. I never said it didn't "work" for me. It did - for a full year. But here's the thing. I have two requirements for notes. One is immediate quick notes - what a lot of people use #AppleNotes, or #Drafts for. But I have #WINDOWS as well. Neither of those work. I use #Simplenote for it. Syncs multiplatform and I could give a fuck about it not being end-to-end secured. #Obsidian for cold-storage of notes. (1/3)

Syncs perfectly (#iCloud / #Syncthing) and absolutely dominates #Joplin when it comes to functionality and flexibility. Literally no competition.

The problem is that Joplin just is nowhere near as good as Simplenote for quick or Obsidian for big. Nowhere near. Plus Joplin Cloud costs $ - there's literally no way on God's green earth I'd pay to sync just one single app. I use Dropbox and it only syncs once every 5 mins. Newp. (2/3)

So there you have it. Joplin's great but on a scale of 1-10 it's a 5 and the other two are 10 each AFAIC. (3/3)
