I found the mention of the Reddit post about how Notion banned a person's account and kept their data, to be particularly interesting. 100% proves what I've always said about Notion, over and above the fact that it requires way too much initial configuration.

Here's the link.

@dhry I killed off my notion account a while back, and going to do the same for Craft. I just need to get off my ass and learn Obsidian.

@jarunmb Obsidian really isn't that difficult. It is wildly powerful with the thousands of plugins available for it, but the truth is that while you might have seen all the tutorials for it, NONE are needed. You don't even need to know markdown.

1) You can create folders on the left: right click → new folder
2) Right-click on the left → new note and boom, you're editing a note
3) Right click on folder on the left → new note, boom you made a note in that folder

That's literally ALL YNTK.

@jarunmb When I walked away from #Evernote I was looking for a replacement, this was years ago and #Obsidian was popular even then. I tried it, it somehow didn't “click" for me, and I used Joplin for about a year maybe. Then I randomly came back to Obsidian - I often give things multiple tries if I feel they deserve them, like #Jellyfin or my #AppleTV, and fell absolutely down the rabbit hole with it second time round.

It's absolutely indispensible to me. Could not get through life without it.

@dhry @jarunmb

What was it about #Joplin that didn't work for you?

@viharm @jarunmb Don't get me wrong. I never said it didn't "work" for me. It did - for a full year. But here's the thing. I have two requirements for notes. One is immediate quick notes - what a lot of people use #AppleNotes, or #Drafts for. But I have #WINDOWS as well. Neither of those work. I use #Simplenote for it. Syncs multiplatform and I could give a fuck about it not being end-to-end secured. #Obsidian for cold-storage of notes. (1/3)

Syncs perfectly (#iCloud / #Syncthing) and absolutely dominates #Joplin when it comes to functionality and flexibility. Literally no competition.

The problem is that Joplin just is nowhere near as good as Simplenote for quick or Obsidian for big. Nowhere near. Plus Joplin Cloud costs $ - there's literally no way on God's green earth I'd pay to sync just one single app. I use Dropbox and it only syncs once every 5 mins. Newp. (2/3)

So there you have it. Joplin's great but on a scale of 1-10 it's a 5 and the other two are 10 each AFAIC. (3/3)

@viharm @dhry @jarunmb For me Joplin wasn’t as functional as Obsidian, and I found it easier to get Obsidian working and looking the way I wanted it to.

But the big thing is local plaintext notes in system folders beats notes in an app’s database

@EpiphanicSynchronicity @viharm @jarunmb Ladies and gentlemen, presenting.. the guy that tried to convince me to use Joplin! 😆
@dhry @viharm @jarunmb Just as a *possible* cross-platform alternative to Drafts (though there really is nothing else quite like Drafts). I’ve never thought Joplin was a bad app, I just don’t like it nearly as much as Obsidian
@EpiphanicSynchronicity @viharm @jarunmb Check out how Drafts-like Obsidian is with the NotebookNavigator plugin though. It's the new darling of the plugin world and it’s totally gone to the developer's head. I shall program this forever! ☝️ Much updates, such plans! releases a fucking new version almost hourly.. 😒

@dhry @viharm @jarunmb It didn’t appeal to me based on the dev’s description and screenshots, but I guess I’ll have to try it

I hope they don’t burn out and end up abandoning it like you sometimes see happen with plugins, but even in that case it may get continued or forked by someone else. We’ll see…

@dhry @viharm @jarunmb What is it that seems Drafts-like to you?

@EpiphanicSynchronicity @viharm @jarunmb Just the extra column showing all the notes with mini previews and literally nothing else. 😄

But yeah. That’s something Obsidian lacked, a one or two row preview of note text in the folder/note column. That’s all. Like Simplenote. No big deal though.

@dhry @EpiphanicSynchronicity @viharm Yep, exactly what I wanted. I’ve never been a fan of the down arrow and all the notes under the folder that can seem to go on forever. I much prefer a tight folder list, and I click one and the second pane has all my notes.
@EpiphanicSynchronicity @dhry @viharm One of the few plugins I did get installed.
@EpiphanicSynchronicity @viharm @jarunmb What’ll likely happen is that Obsidian will clone the functionality into a poor shadow of the original, make it a built-in, spend useless development cycles on it over months and stockholm-syndrome their users into thinking theirs is better, causing the original dev to cry, take their ball and go home, and quit developing it forever. Mark me. 🔮
