Federal agents deployed #TearGas on #Chicago residents & more than a dozen #police officers Tuesday [in defiance of a #CourtOrder], the latest clash in the nation’s 3rd-largest city as the #Trump admin has carried out its #immigration *crackdown*.

The clash began Tues morning when #FederalAgents were seen chasing a car through a working-class, heavily Latino neighborhood on the city’s far South Side, witnesses said.

An SUV driven by the federal agents collided with the car they were pursuing, #Chicago PD said, sending that car into another vehicle that was parked nearby.

After the crash, dozens of additional #immigration agents in masks arrived & residents emerged from their houses, gathering on streets & sidewalks, throwing objects at agents & shouting, “ICE go home!”

As the agents left, they released #TearGas, apparently without warning, sending people coughing & running for cover. Among those affected by the gas were 13 #Chicago #Police Dept officers, CPD said, & at least one officer was seen rinsing his eyes out with water from a neighbor’s garden hose.

A spox for #DHS said that the federal agents were conducting an #immigration enforcement operation when 2 people tried to flee & hit the agents’ vehicle [#lies].

It was one of many *turbulent episodes* [acts of #resistance] to erupt in #Chicago in recent days. Federal agents from #ICE & #CBP have roamed the city & suburbs making arrests, often pulling up to people walking along sidewalks, stopping them & questioning them.

The agents repeatedly have been observed releasing smoke bombs, tear gas & pepper balls to disperse residents who gather or capture videos on cellphones, including when the agents were making arrests in densely populated neighborhoods.

Chicago #police officers, who have been called to the scenes…[by protesters], have been exposed to #TearGas from federal agents twice in the last 2 weeks.

As the intensity of the #Trump admin’s #immigration crackdown has risen, residents of #Chicago are increasingly pushing back with fury.

In the last several weeks, Chicagoans have formed volunteer groups to monitor their neighborhoods for federal immigration agents, posting alerts on Facebook & in Signal group chats when agents are seen.

If agents are spotted on the street, motorists lean on their horns as a warning & sometimes give chase. Around the city last weekend, pairs of volunteers were seen with orange whistles around their necks, blowing the whistles at the first sight of #immigration agents.

…Last month, Andre Vasquez, a City Council member who is chairman of #Chicago’s Cmte on Immigrant & Refugee Rights, sponsored a “community defense workshop” to inform residents of their rights & help them organize politically.

“#Chicago’s been doing just fine, & then these guys showed up,” Vasquez said of federal #immigration officers. “There is big concern about what these unidentified, #masked men are doing in this city without accountability. Chicagoans are just trying to live their life. We’re not going to tolerate #unconstitutional #authoritarianism.”

Bystanders have posted videos of arrests that appear unrelated to violations of #immigration #law.
Debbie Brockman, an employee of the TV station #WGN was pinned to the ground & arrested by #BorderPatrol agents on Friday while walking to a bus stop. A #CBP official said [lied] that Brockman had thrown an object at federal agents. Brockman’s lawyer called the arrest an attack. Brockman was released without charges.

Yarelly Jimenez, 21, a resident of #Chicago,…& 2 others were recording federal agents in a Walgreens Tues & hurriedly left the store to get away from them….

Shoppers yelled at the agents, videos by bystanders show. “Real Americans don’t want you here!” one man said.

An agent grabbed one of Jimenez’s companions, Warren King, 19, on his way out, asking him why he was running & pinning him to the ground. It was uncertain what King was accused of, & DHS did not provide a reason for his arrest.

Several bystanders witnessed her arrest & described the scene as “violent” & “horrifying”….

“This incident should be alarming & horrifying to every single person in this country,” said Brad Thomson, one of Brockman’s attys. “If armed, masked, federal agents are snatching US citizens off the street as they walk to work & throwing them in unmarked vehicles, you can only imagine what these agents must be willing to do to our immigrant neighbors & people who dare to speak out against them.”

In a social media post after Brockman’s arrest, Gregory Bovino, commander-at-large of the #US #BorderPatrol, claimed“a member of the press threw a metal object at Border Patrol” & was arrested for assaulting a federal officer.

But Brockman was released without charges after she was held in federal custody for 7 hours, her lawyer said. WGN said during a newscast covering her arrest that Brockman’s department is separate from the newsroom.

#DHS said in a stmnt that #BorderPatrol agents were operating in the area when “violent agitators” blocked agents with their cars. The agents then slammed into a car they say was blocking the street as they were leaving the scene, acc/to the stmnt.

Video reviewed by the #Chicago Sun-Times shows a black SUV stopped diagonally in front of the federal agents’ silver Chrysler minivan just as they were about to leave. The agents did NOT try to go around the SUV.

Instead, an agent got out of the van & walked up to the SUV, trying to open its door. When that was unsuccessful, the agent returned to the van & quickly pulled away, hitting the side of the SUV as they sped away.
When the agents were driving away, DHS’s stmnt claims Brockman “threw objects” at a #BorderPatrol car. Agents then arrested her for assaulting a federal law enforcement officer.
#DHS did not answer why Brockman was released without being charged with that offense.
