look it's 9pm on a saturday:

of COURSE I'm installing Office 95 intro a Windows 98 VM, why wouldn't I be?

I don't have spreadsheet problems, I have...
God, Powerpoint 95 is a look. How many buttons can you fit on a 640x480 screen? At least this many!
five toolbars. count 'em. I did. and got it wrong the first time, because I missed that there's one embedded in the status bar

OH MY GOD I CAN TURN ON MORE TOOLBARS

I'M GOING INTO HYPERSPACE

the fact I can turn on a toolbar that just lets me jump to other Office Software is the most "Someone got a promotion for that" feature I've seen in a while
good point, why DON'T I have FoxPro installed? I am often asking myself this!
I'm on it
There it is. God, that splash screen is a Time, isn't it?

if you ask it to help you create a table, one of the suggested databases is one to track your film, you know for photographers? like what date you had that roll developed...

That's some 1996-ass functionality right there.

for some reason Fox Pro comes with Imagedit, a pixel image editor that can edit BMP, CUR, and ICO.

The FoxPro logo is definitely Arial, but it's tweaked a little bolder than Arial Heavy, and the kerning has been manually tweaked, it looks like.

Microsoft liked to do this around 1995. They'd design something with their standard fonts, but then have some graphical designers tweak how it looked. Like the "It's now safe to shutdown your computer" screen: they tweaked several letters in that.

I overlaid some Ariel on it and tried to match it. Aside from the boldness issue, you can see the kerning is different on "Fo" and they redrew the V

this is a little annoying if you're invested in mimicing Microsoft typography from 1995.

That may seem an obscure thing to be concerned with but it seems to come up for me all the time.

you know how much I'm working? I'm using Microsoft Visual ProPro Professional Edition™!
I'm installing so many microsoft products I'm a...
put all your stuff in a Visual ProBox
I wrote some code to generate a random name out of some of the wordchunks I had edited already and it resulted in this
>>> import random
>>> options=['Fox','Box','Pox','Pro','Bro','Fro']
>>> print('Visual '+''.join(random.choice(options) for _ in range(8)))
Visual BoxProBroProBroProFoxBox
oh god this "quick shitpost" (already two hours in) just hit the "hey I could make this twice as funny if I just spent 10 times as long on it" point
it kinda feels like I spent most of the 2000s staring at JASC Paint Shop Pro 3 or 4
Trying out this handy Imageditor for my icon editing needs.
Digging through the extensive MSDN help files to figure out how to use VB6 controls
@foone is it possible to dump these into plain text so you can search through them easier?
@tofu probably, but where's the fun in that? :)
@foone You know what? I don't know you enough to even mention what I'd do to move fast through such things, as digging trough docs at random can be mind numbing and waste your spoons.
@tofu yeah this is less about doing it most optimally and more about having fun programming like it's 1998, with all its faults.
@foone I mean at least I'd pop it into my text editor or grep through it…
@foone The NINETIES attack. You take PSYCHIC DAMAGE.

@parsingphase I honestly miss having actual developer documentation available that isn't just a list of types and functions with one-sentence tautologies next to each of them.

@foone

@krans @foone Honestly? Same. You know that documentation wasn't written by AI, or SEO- or ad-optimized.

@krans @parsingphase @foone

@foone Here, catch.
@kawa @foone what "Power BI" could have been if we kept the faith.
@foone Flashbacks of irfanview dance through my eyes. From the way back when.
@foone now there’s a name I’ve not heard in a long time
@foone microsoft paint fox pro
@foone JASC PaintShop Fox Pro Bro 4
@foone I’ve been using PSP7 for 25 years and PSP10 for about 20 as PSP7 caps out around 100 layers (2GB RAM limit?). I switched to Krita now only because PSP10 won’t work on WINE and even then Krita doesn’t show you individual vector objects in the layers palette yet :( GIMP UI is still a writeoff
@foone the clown log scale
@foone I think it’s time to retire the concept of “quick shitpost” — maybe you should go with tshirt sizing? Or Fibonacci?

@foone

I feel like you should have this post in a keyboard macro. 😉

@foone Visual Fort Nox Pro
@pyro Visual Fox Now
