Tethering is totally broken on my iPhone 17 Pro.

It might be the 26.1 beta it's running, but it’s completely unreliable. Frequently loses all connectivity until the phone is rebooted.

I've been spoiled all summer by how amazing it was with Tahoe's auto-connection to my 16 Pro (as it almost melted through the train seat).

Shout out to one thing that got much nicer recently:

Music.app on iOS not only remembers the song you were playing through a termination or iPhone reboot, but it even resumes from the timestamp you left it at!

@marcoarment Can it do handoff w macOS now? So hard right now to keep the music playing when you get to your desk.
@marcoarment Total opposite here. Music.app is the one app giving me the most trouble. Won't BT to my car for more than a minute. Song keeps playing, just can't hear it. And then nothing makes any sound without restarting my car. Ugh. (FWIW, OC works great.)
@marcintosh @marcoarment Wait, getting the Music app working again requires restarting your entire *car*? (I mean, I suppose there’s no good way to restart just the entertainment system, but still, that’s absolutely ridiculous.)
@alextm @marcoarment Nothing gets the Music app working again. It fails every time. I have to restart to get -Bluetooth- to work again. I’m still not convinced the stereo isn’t the problem, that somehow it updated, but Music is the only app that triggers it - audiobooks, podcasts, even YouTube all work fine. So frustrating.
@marcoarment Any chance it does that with Apple Music Radio shows too? I would jump up just for that.
@marcoarment Honestly it’s this kind of thing I’d like to see tech companies focussing on instead of jamming LLM shite into everything.
@marcoarment I want to be able to continue what I was listening to on another device, like my Mac or iPad.
@marcoarment not only that, it picked up at the same place for me after transferring to my new phone.

@marcoarment

Now I just need music.app to stop thinking I wanted to listen to music and overtaking Overcast as the current audio player.

@marcoarment resume at timestamp seems like a feature that mostly appeals to Phish fans (not that there’s anything wrong with that.)
@marcoarment I submitted radars on this back when they were called radars. #betterlatethannever
@marcoarment does it still automatically start the first song in the first album by alphabetical order when connecting to CarPlay? It’s been driving me nuts for years now
@kwyxz @marcoarment that just sounds like your vehicle’s infotainment doing something weird. maybe try looking in its settings menu for something like auto play or something?

@saige @marcoarment it’s 100% a CarPlay bug

Solution from Apple Communities : turn off CarPlay <facepalm> https://discussions.apple.com/thread/255524064

(see the Similar Questions underneath, it is a common issue)

Stop Music Auto Play When Entering Car - Apple Community

@kwyxz @marcoarment odd, i’ve never had that problem…
@saige @marcoarment @kwyxz I had that problem but it was years ago (and it was driving me nuts too). I believe it has been fixed a while back, as I didn’t experience that in the last 4 years.
@marcoarment It’s a sad state we Apple Music folks are in when these our our wins. In contrast…my mind is frequently blown when I am listening to Spotify at work on my laptop and then Spotify in my Tesla picks up where I left off (talk about surprise and delight) after I close my laptop and get in the car. I sometimes think of just how far apple is from that and 🫠
@marcoarment I know that good state restoration isn’t the fashionable thing nowadays, but termination and app switching really should be indistinguishable in all apps. In 2008 it was indistinguishable by design, so you had to make it work.
@marcoarment But does it also remember where you navigated in your library for longer than 5 seconds after an app switch?
@marcoarment For me tethering itself works with my 15 Pro Max, but it’s annoying to get constant notifications on my Mac that the phone is low on battery (it isn’t) and suggestions to disconnect. This started in Sequoia and for a brief moment looked like it was fixed with Tahoe, but it’s a mess once again. My iPhone: ”I’m on 5G with 88% battery”, my Mac: ”No you’re not, to me it looks like you’re on 3G and almost dead” 🤷‍♂️
@marcoarment If the only new Mac that gets cellular is the budget A-chip model, would you buy it??

@marcoarment

Just curious… are you slamming it with throughput, like HD video?

@Chancerubbage No. Basic web/email stuff.
@marcoarment last nights 26.0.1 seems to exclusively focus on WiFi and BT issues in the 17/17pro and Air — maybe there’ll be a beta bump as well?
@marcoarment Weird. Just installed 26.01 and the patch notes listed Wifi and Bluetooth connectivity issues as one of the fixed items.
@marcoarment Apple is preparing the market for Mac’s with cellular that is somehow a $600 upgrade only available on the models with all CPU cores and requires the 4TB storage space upgrade too.
@marcoarment Been pretty reliable for me on SE2 since the first 26 beta. Probably not the beta.
