⚠️ Confirmed: Live network data show a collapse in internet access in #Afghanistan with high impact to Kabul, leaving national connectivity at 30% of ordinary levels; the incident follows telecoms disruptions in the provinces as the Taliban leadership targets "immoral" activities
⚠️ Update: Live metrics show internet connectivity in #Afghanistan has now collapsed to 14% of ordinary levels, with a near-total nationwide telecoms disruption in effect; the incident is likely to severely limit the public's ability to contact the outside world
⚠️ Update: #Afghanistan is now in the midst of a total internet blackout as Taliban authorities move to implement morality measures, with multiple networks disconnected through the morning in a stepwise manner; telephone services are currently also impacted
⚠️ Update: It has now been 24 hours since #Afghanistan imposed a national internet blackout, cutting off residents from the rest of the world; the ongoing measure marks the Taliban's return to conservative values it espoused a quarter of a century ago limiting basic freedoms
@netblocks I wish I were there right now to see whether there's a way to tunnel around it or if the internet is completely shut down😗
@thekhanj @netblocks Apparently, all BGP routes are withdrawn from the internet, so there is no way to get outside.
@dergrobi @netblocks Ummm... Netblocks has reported the same thing during Iran-Israel 12 day war, but there was a way out back then... dunno 🤷‍♂️
@thekhanj @netblocks I looked into my router's BGP fulltable which is missing routes of at least AS58469 — and without a route in the global DFZ, servers won't be able to send traffic to you, thus making it impossible to use VPN services or such.
@dergrobi @thekhanj @netblocks True, Iran operates one of the world’s most sophisticated filtering systems, so normally there’s always a chance to tunnel through. But in this case it looks different: I highly suspect they physically cut fiber cables to stop people even bothering to try. The only real option left is Starlink, but reports suggest the Taliban has issued arrest orders for anyone using it, so hearing voices from inside will be very difficult.
@isik5 @dergrobi @netblocks Yeah, probably :) But buying Starlink here would also get you arrested. During the war, it felt surreal and sad that I had to relay messages to people abroad about their families back in Iran 🫣.
