@netblocks

@EdwinG an update on the news story you posted ⬆️

@SnowyCA That second half of the post though 😵‍💫

indeed. Censorship means we may never find out the truth of what's going on there.
Scary times for the citizens.

@netblocks We're seeing the same return of traffic to www.bbc.com from Afghanistan:

@netblocks I wish I were there right now to see whether there's a way to tunnel around it or if the internet is completely shut down😗
@thekhanj @netblocks Apparently, all BGP routes are withdrawn from the internet, so there is no way to get outside.
@dergrobi @netblocks Ummm... Netblocks has reported the same thing during Iran-Israel 12 day war, but there was a way out back then... dunno 🤷‍♂️
@thekhanj @netblocks I looked into my router's BGP fulltable which is missing routes of at least AS58469 — and without a route in the global DFZ, servers won't be able to send traffic to you, thus making it impossible to use VPN services or such.
@dergrobi @thekhanj @netblocks True, Iran operates one of the world’s most sophisticated filtering systems, so normally there’s always a chance to tunnel through. But in this case it looks different: I highly suspect they physically cut fiber cables to stop people even bothering to try. The only real option left is Starlink, but reports suggest the Taliban has issued arrest orders for anyone using it, so hearing voices from inside will be very difficult.
@isik5 @dergrobi @netblocks Yeah, probably :) But buying Starlink here would also get you arrested. During the war, it felt surreal and sad that I had to relay messages to people abroad about their families back in Iran 🫣.
@thekhanj @netblocks there is no way, all of the GSM Cell phones and Sim cards connections are blocked, all of the mobiles are no services... its not just the internet problem , the problem is all of the connections ways are blocked, they blocked the local phone lines and cell phones too.
@netblocks Deeply concerning. A national internet blackout not only isolates people but also silences voices that need to be heard the most. The Afghan people deserve connection, access to information, and the ability to communicate freely with the world.

The Tor project is great and its definitely important to support them! But if all the internet connectivity in Afghanistan is blocked, then I don't see how even Tor could help in this case

If you consider this a safe space, you need to tell chief Baerbock / UN that you do not accept fundamental human rights nor UN WSIS anymore.
