There was a time when a game taking up 262 MB of hard disk space was considered CRAZY, even by the game's own developers! πŸ€¦πŸΎβ€β™‚οΈπŸ€·πŸΎβ€β™‚οΈ

Like many of you, this is more space than my entire hard drive had. Back then though, I got a copy of the game on floppies from a friend.

Now in my older days I can afford to pick up an original CD from eBay. My first PC - the one I first played Descent and Descent II on - didn't even have a CD-ROM drive. And I vividly remember the hard disk was 170 MB in total.

One of the best things about retro collecting is fully experiencing what we missed back then.

@wossman Descent 2 was a game...

@wossman

Such a great game. And yes, the joystick is a must. I think I had a Sidewinder to play it. Maybe something older.

@wossman so true. Descent ftw!! Love the game but I'm SO bad at it hahaha
@jake4480 Yep. Aren't we all?! πŸ€¦πŸΎβ€β™‚οΈ
@wossman oh good, maybe NO ONE is good at Descent. Whew πŸ˜…πŸ˜‚
@jake4480 @wossman can confirm and even though there is a 3D map I always mistook where I was

@wossman

I smell Turbo Pascal, or at least some other Borland product.

@zl2tod Are you saying the code was inefficient? I think it was just high quality assets. πŸ€·πŸΎβ€β™‚οΈ

@wossman

No, just that it was likely written in Turbo Pascal or compiled with another Borland product.

@wossman 20% of your HD for a game: madness! 😱
@zbrando @wossman For when you need that quick HDD access to the cinematics because streaming them off the CD just won't do.
@wossman I remember when I got that game back in 96 and was like: "262MB? That's half of my entire drive size!!!"
Oh those were the times.
@wossman Also, there was a time when spinning rust was "accessed quickly"
@wossman the original Doom was bigger than the hard drive on my first PC
@wossman I've not played Descent in a very long time but I used to love it. It was amazingly smooth (although with low res graphics) on the 486's of the day.
@pugmiester It sure was. I played it on a DX33. Although, I didn't have anything better to compare with so I'm not sure I knew what I didn't know. πŸ€·πŸΎβ€β™‚οΈ
@wossman When I played this with a VR headset, I would only last 10 minutes before succumbing to vertigo.
@wossman That settings seems to be pretty Descent!
@wossman today 262MB are used for the notice that tells you to to keep waiting meanwhile downloading a 92GB update.
