WOW… That’s how shitty #Merica is. #Capitalism and #Corporatism gone absolutely bonkus. In our lucky country (despite all its problems and issues), home owners get to own their PV and battery installation and even get a $$ helping hand with Govt grants to install it. Over on the other side of the great Pacific, #Finance companies are marketing home owners into ‘leasing’ PV installations… what a bunch of grifting fuckers.
Land of the free, home of the brave… give me a break…

Great piece on the enshittification of solar by @pluralistic@mamot.fr One thing to add is my sense that many solar companies (at least in the US) are really just finance companies. We got quotes for rooftop solar and the most expensive option was for us to own the installation outright. They want you to lease. Going with the finance option wouldn't have made us any better off month-to-month, and we couldn't front the cost to own outright, so we just elect a clean energy supplier instead. More savvy consumers could probably figure out how to do an independent install, but rooftop solar is aggressively marketed by several companies in our area. https://pluralistic.net/2025/09/23/our-friend-the-electron/

@RaymondPierreL3 yes, despite all the issues, I still think we are very lucky in this country. Unfortunately, we have a side of politics that want us to be more like the US, and we have to resist that at all costs imho
