@Eetschrijver @GottaLaff Am fairly sure it’s the #neoliberalism flavour of capitalism which began in the late 70s and really took root in the 80s that has, in part, brought the world to this. Many politicos on the left and the right jumped on the same bandwagon and left societies damaged as a result - the top 1% benefitted enormously though. Scared people then fell for #FarRight hate and lies.

A certain Silvio Berlusconi used his control of the media to paint the pictures he wanted. Same recipe has spread beyond Italy and it’s pretty clear the #FarRight are very well coordinated.

That's the whole point, isn't it? The stakeholders in this obscene scheme are already so rich that they control all the megaphones. And whoever manages opposition strong enough to be noticed is immediately crushed. Litigation against moguls of this caliber is, to all intents and purposes, impossible.

@pookiesorcery Orwell was undoubtedly prescient and no doubt took into consideration the nazi and communist regimes. The USSR at the time resembled Orwell’s big brother. The billionaires believe that by investing hundreds of billions of dollars into AI research, that they will get AGI that eliminates their dependence on human labor. They want the science fiction post-scarcity economy, but only for themselves. Once the billionaires have AGI, they have no interest in the rest of us, and would gladly eliminate us if we get uppity.

The fly in their ointment is that they're not going to get AGI for a very long time, if ever. Most of the money is going to LLMs, which are not on a path that leads to any intelligence, let alone AGI. Sam Altman promises otherwise, so they keep throwing money at it, and accelerating the destruction of the ecosphere in the process.

@brouhaha Ha! It appears that quite a few billionaires believe LLMs are #AI! They are not (but I will admit to thinking they were initially). Machine learning is AI tech that helps build LLMs but there’s that #hallucination issue!

What to make of this long list?
Well, the first thing that comes to mind is how it got like this - I see three options:-
1) it's far too difficult for even the greatest minds to run a country
2) we elect incompetent politicians
3) they never intended to make it good for us at all
I don't think it's 1)

But for everyone else, the political #right is the #wrong direction to head in and it’s also led to the lunatic in the US.
