You are under no obligation to mourn the death of people who would’ve celebrated yours.

It is very interesting to me how triggering this little thought is to a certain subset of people. They don’t just want us to be targets of their hate, they expect us to mourn their ringleaders, and my reminder that we don’t have to is very upsetting to them.

They’re delusional bullies, and the smallest act of resistance threatens them deeply.

I enjoy that.

This is just what I think about while I block the people so fragile that the simple act of not mourning a nazi causes them to lash out at me.
(I’m fine. Just observing.)

@fraying I think your instance has already filtered out the Nazis, you’re probably talking about insecure neuroatypical people, including eggs, and people living with domestic abusers.

By the way, neuroatypicality has an hereditary factor, and digital predation survivors are domestic abusers themselves. Maybe the people you’re blocking are projecting and would rather find resources online.

@oceane No, I'm talking about trolls telling me they'll celebrate my death. I don't need to go out of my way to psychoanalyze them and neither do you.
@fraying Sorry, I think I haven’t seen the same messages, my bad.
@oceane It's cool. I often try to understand why bad people do bad things, but in this case ... nah.
@fraying I’m really sorry, I didn’t mean to tone police you over Nazis trolling you in your mentions, I didn’t realize you had close to 5,000 followers – I should have been more careful about that
@fraying Anyway, I’m glad we’re cool but my first reply was absolutely not… Good night
@oceane It's all good - thanks for the apology but we're good. I know your heart was in the right place. Ever forward!
@fraying and they call *us* snowflakes, ha!

@fraying I’m keeping a close eye on the LTE section of the local paper for the next few days…

Charlie got a smallish headline on B3 today, with most of the article (and a smallish B/W photo) continued on B4.

@mivox @fraying this whole (wide gestures) is providing so many pearl clutchers for my block list though. I'd never even heard of him (would that it had remained thus,) and I've been making notes of who not to bother to go to the polls for down the road. Assuming we still have elections, which... I am not....
@secretsloth @fraying Yeeeeah, I’m making no assumptions about future elections. And I am deeply horrified to say that.
@mivox I'm frankly starting to wonder if they would be that helpful at this rate, with all the Democrats serving corporate interests and those corporate interests becoming ever more consolidated and more beholden to maga, and meanwhile, the supreme court being more and more clear that they have no intention of doing anything but bend the knee... like... obviously all of this is deeply bad, but the system can't be what it was, either. I don't have the answers, but. 💀 I know it's not this.

@secretsloth I’m a big supporter of proportional representation, killing the electoral college, universal ranked choice voting, and barring any privately funded election advertising or donations.

How to make that happen when literally everyone in power is a product of our big money donation & first-past-the post elections? That’s where I’m a bit lost. 🙃

@mivox @secretsloth Sounds like you've arrived at the point where youve realise that you cannot reform the current systems because they are either corrupted beyond redemption or were inherently flawed to begin with
@chriszanf @secretsloth Been there. Got to that point many years ago.
@mivox well.... the government becomes illegitemate when it no longer represents the interests of the people, according to the *oh so worshipped* white men of yore, and SO, if we don't get to vote, it would be our constitutional duty to uh. (Checks notes) I guess, be the people? Yes. Be the people. I can be a people. I smell like dog but there's a people under all the slobber and tangled covers somewhere. I think.
@secretsloth I have every confidence you are definitely a people, even when disguised as a dog bed.
@mivox it's always good to double check, just in case 👀 whew.
@fraying @awoodsnet No obligation, no… but be the change you want to see in the world.
@fraying When evil leaves the world, the world naturally becomes net-better

@fraying Sorry for shitting up your thread below, but this collaborationist coward has pissed me off.

You designed Blogger? That's amazing! Thank you very much for that!

@audreygwinter no worries. I’m quick to block and already got ‘em.
@audreygwinter and yeah I did! An increasingly long time ago.
@fraying Man, those were the days! Great meeting you, actually, nevermind the kerfuffle. May I follow you?
@audreygwinter of course! And yeah, they were. Did you have a blog back then?
@fraying I did, actually, for a little while. I was never able to keep up with such things, as I'm generally a very private person and didn't have much writing discipline.

@fraying @audreygwinter Ah, I didn't know this account was you. I met you so many years ago, when you were promoting blogger...back when I was trying to get my non-profit for Science Literacy off the ground. I recall you as actually paying attention to me, and answering my questions, and you partner was very rude and dismissive to me.

Hmm...anyway, I do Science Art now. Ha!

And it's nice to see that you take fediverse seriously. You were always the brains.

@kristinHenry What a nice memory! I'm sorry I don't remember it, but I've blocked a lot of that time out of my head. (Do you remember the name of my partner? I'm trying to remember which one it was.) Anyway, hooray for science art and distributed community systems!
@fraying
He wouldn't, and you know it.
@fraying This is an understandable sentiment. But I'm slowly learning that we have a duty to moderate reactions on an open web. It's something we all struggle with because the times change faster than a human mind can comprehend.

@fraying

Thank you! I need these gentle reminders dropping in my feed.

While I certainly don't and won't condone or encourage assassinations of anyone, I'm not sorry the awful man who spewed hatred and promoted violence for a living is no longer alive. Though I do think a cocaine overdose would have been more fitting, then we wouldn't have to deal with being shamed and gaslit for not lauding him as a free speech martyr or noble contributor to society. He did nothing but harm.

@fraying exactly. If someone breaks the social contract, there is no reason why the other party should honour it.
@fraying Nor is anyone under any obligation to "think of their family". That particular individual was surrounded by friends and family that did nothing to counter or temper his abhorrent opinions but in fact benefited from his grift. They were not hostages in his life but active participants

@fraying When Jörg Haider died in that car crash that he, himself caused by driving way too fast and way too drunk, I said:

Pity he died, but it's great that we'll never see him in public again.

Pretty much having the same feeling again now.

@fraying Very well put! I'm stealing this ( okay screen shotting ) and not giving you credit! :-)
@fraying I did mourn a father's death but yes you are right
