“Live Translation with AirPods is not available if you are in the EU and your Apple Account Country or Region is also in the EU”

Why is it that I keep buying products from this shitty company?

iOS and iPadOS have so many amazing features. Find out which ones are available on iPhone and iPad in your country or region.

Apple
@simonbs This tomfoolery is why I've decided to halt any Apple purchases for the foreseeable future.
@softmaus @simonbs what's the real reason?
@nicolas17 @simonbs It was thought to be for valid GDPR reasons because the translation doesn’t happen on-device. But seems like it could also be for DMA reasons which would be the same stupid hands-off approach again, of course. See https://mastodon.social/@mysk/115185815044652443
@simonbs ”In particular, the EU's Artificial Intelligence Act and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) both impose strict requirements for how speech and translation services are offered. Regulators may want to study how Live Translation works, and how that impacts privacy, consent, data-flows, and user rights. Apple will also want to ensure its system fully complies with these rules before enabling the feature across EU accounts.”
Definitely doubt you’re aiming the anger correctly
@simonbs I think the issue is that the EU DCMA could be interpreted that if they provide this feature they should allow third parties (ie google translate) to do the same…
@simonbs live translation is not available in the region with multiple distinct languages

@simonbs @monkeydom it is a shitty company because they don’t immediate managed to fulfill your urgent need for instant live translation in your ear, magic like the babel fish in a product you don’t need to buy? Reminds me of Louis CK.

@Malik @simonbs what a rebuttal O_o. The shittyness in terms of their stance against the EU and Market regulations is very well documented and apparent, and It is no stretch to also inply malicous intent.

It might be that there is a more direct reason for this move particular move though, I give you that.

@monkeydom @simonbs ofc you absolutely have a point about them being extremely adamant about keeping their gold mines working to the degree of even self harming the company
@simonbs my only doubt here is between: because they’re trying to exert pressure or just doing everything to avoid some possible future lawsuit.
Either way, we, the loyal customers pay the consequences.
