When you read the conclusions of Sir Laure Magnus' investigation into Angela Rayner's miss-payment of taxation, it is even more obvious that while it was her choice to resign, this really was a storm in a teacup, and hence really is (as I said earlier) the sad case of a working-class woman being hounded out of office for an issue that would have been down-played should she have been an entitled male member of the political class!

@ChrisMayLA6 I think the real reason she resigned is that she's not interested in co-owning Starmer's flaming fiasco anymore.
@ChrisMayLA6 If she were Tory, this story would already have been forgotten about and moved on from. The hypocrisy is sickening 🤮
@ChrisMayLA6
On the plus side for her, if no one else, it gives her the opportunity to start distancing herself from Starmer's increasingly inept and authoritarian government. Which might have been a factor in her resigning rather than toughing it out.

@Stevenheywood

Yes, maybe - distancing herself might be a good move in the longer term....

@ChrisMayLA6 I believe the technical term is "rat-fucked".

@ChrisMayLA6 She was quick enough to seek expert legal advice once the Torygraph broke the story. Pity she didn't do so before attempting to defraud the taxpayer of £40,000.

@andyc

Well, I'd imagine few of us would seek a second opinion if we had the first & it seemed OK; the difficulty is non-experts understanding our byzantine tax laws.

But when she was advised there was a problem, as you say she was quick to get a second opinion.... I would say that's how most of us would have acted.

You might say as the ethics review suggested as someone in her position she should have routinely got a second opinion, but that's hardly corruption!

@ChrisMayLA6 If I understand correctly the trust beneficiary will turn 18 within three years of the flat purchase. At that point will Angela Rayner then only be owner of one property and be able to reclaim the additional stamp duty?

@JosephLord

Sadly, these intricacies of tax/trust law are beyond me...
