@pluralistic LOOOOOOOOVE TO SEE IT! CONGRATULATIONS! YOU'VE MADE THIS NERD MOMMA PROUD!

@pluralistic

That's a hard act to follow, but you can do it. What do you have planned?

@pluralistic does this mean I have to restrict my use to only "digital platforms"?

@pluralistic

Congratulation Doctorow, it's not everyone who gets to coin a word and end up defining a generation!

@pluralistic On its way to becoming Word of the Year!

@evanwolf @pluralistic

Exactly. Ever since I first heard this term it seems to apply to a lot more than just digital systems. It seems to be the end result of capitalism once true competition no longer exists. Deregulation, endless mergers and acquisitions aren't an accident.

@pluralistic congrats! Their definition isn’t quite the same as you coined it, since it’s not just users that things get worse for, but it’s concise and close enough to how people have been using it.

Very cool to have that in a dictionary now!

@pluralistic looking forward to seeing this word in next year’s Scripps National Spelling Bee. 🐝

New AI test:
How many Ts in enshittification?

Viewing that page without ad-blockers shows M-W itself is heavily enshittified:

@pluralistic Congrats 👏 Obvs shame the word is needed but definitions of problems help lead to solutions :)

@pluralistic

That is totally fetch!

@pluralistic It's now legal in Scrabble if anyone manages it!

@sharif @flamepanther @pluralistic Maybe not in online versions that auto-check words. But while Hasbro has added a *recommendation* to use the one you've linked to, the rules don't mandate the use of any specific dictionary. The main Merriam-Webster dictionary would still be valid. 👍
@flamepanther @pluralistic It would be difficult unless, say, "SHIT," "CAT," and "ON" were already perfectly spaced on the board.
@flamepanther @pluralistic I'd be very impressed if someone manage to fit a 16 letter word on a 15x15 grid :D
@flamepanther @pluralistic I learnt the other day that so is goatse (in British Scrabble at least). Strangely enough the Android version won't tell me the definition. I wonder why!
@flamepanther @pluralistic sixteen letters, it won't fit in the standard scrabble board.
@pluralistic I feel this definition isn't limited to just digital platforms.

@pluralistic I'm currently listening to episode 500 of your podcast containing an excerpt from #Enshittification the audio book.

At the beginning you not only quoted Ed Zitron, you actually had him say: "I'll never forgive them for what they've done to the computer." I thought that was super cool.

It made me think the audio book would be even better with more people voicing their own quotes, like having @tveastman actually say "I'm old enough to remember when the Internet wasn't a group of five websites, each consisting of screenshots of text from the other four."

I don't know if he'd be interested, and I don't know if it's possible at this stage, but IMO it would really enhance the audio book experience to do that.

Just an idea.

@pluralistic replace "digital platform" with "product": a lot of non digital things have been enshitified!!!
@pluralistic The IT director for my work city used the term “encrapification” today, so now there’s a SFW version.

@Fledglingnerd @pluralistic I made this slide in my talk at Everything Open in January mostly ‘coz it amused me but also ‘coz we sometimes have young folk in the audience… 💁‍♀️

(yes, I read it out as “en-poop-ocene”, “en-poop-ening”, etc. 🙃)

@Fledglingnerd @pluralistic Where is "crap" a safe for work word where "shit" is not? That's mind boggling.

@pluralistic Trying hard not to read anything nefarious into the fact that they ignored that it also means it's worse for their business customers too.

Congratulations. Super envious.

@pluralistic Nice, but is Enshittification restricted to digital platforms?
For example: Isn't the way products like smartphones, kitchen appliances, even cars, or train locomotives, become less and less repairable an enshittification, too?
@pluralistic Congratulations, enhancing concise communication one adverbial phrase at a time.
