a reminder that the language you use matters and "sideloading" is a term made up by the enemy

it's called installing software

"sideloading" is digital "jaywalking". you're still just crossing the street but the corpos have made up a word to make you look bad for it
@soop after seeing the adam ruins everything episode on jaywalking... this is actually a really good way to put it tbh.
Installing is just copying....
@soop
@p @soop
and copying is always right. Hence the word 'copyright'.
don't forget to backup your backups
@jbiserkov
@p @jbiserkov if you haven't tested restoring them recently, do that too.
@soop this is the first time in a while that a post on social media made me go "oh, right, yeah" in my head
@soop too bad it makes me feel cool fuck em
@silly @soop I'm running a sideloaded gender :3
@soop "sideloading"? you mean installing apps I want on MY device from the source I want to get them from?

@koopa512 yeah it's stupid

that word is part of their effort to normalize jailware phones

@soop its funny how it started with "using adb to install something without the main os running" and then randomly turned into a slur like wtf
@soop yeah nobody gives a single shit where I live, you'll have people crossing a busy intersection weaving in between cars
and people seem to be doing alright.
@soop but "installing software from other sources" is long

but more seriously. yeah
@soop also "littering" before versus after non-biodegradable disposable consumer packaging became the norm
@apophis @soop Is it funny that I grew up considering littering to be a crime against civilization, but also disposing of organic trash like apple cores by merrily throwing it out of car windows?
@Gorfram @soop that's where baby apple trees come from!
@Gorfram @apophis @soop makes perfect sense to me. When you throw an apple core outside the car, it'll just become dirt indistinguishable from the surrounding dirt, or maybe an apple tree. At worst, the impact is pretty neutral. At best, you just planted free food for the public on the side of the road.
Plastic litter is, at best, an eyesore until it gets cleaned up. At worst, it kills wildlife. Or lowers sperm rates in people who drink from the closest fresh water supply. Etc etc
@raphaelmorgan @Gorfram @soop exactly

worst thing that can happen is that the fruit is an invasive species (or carried one and that wasn't half a worm its ass just looked like that) but that's a nonzero risk for any import

@apophis @soop @raphaelmorgan Another potential problem is that, if large numbers of people consistently leave organic trash in a given place, wildlife will come to depend upon it as a food source. This can lead to wildlife overpopulation & to β€œnuisance” behavior.
However, only one of those is a problem to anyone but humans; and both go away if the humans go away.

Very much unlike the situation with plastic waste.

@Gorfram @soop @raphaelmorgan it'll be a problem to whatever else those particular critters eat, and the rot and the poop is going to be very unfriendly to a lot of other things, but still not quite the same forever problem
@soop a pirate don't feel bad about theses made up words because a pirate is free
Sideloading - Wikipedia

@rolenthedeep @soop huh. the more you know.
@lritter @rolenthedeep @soop
Well, it seems there was an established but somewhat niche term which described something adjacent but in the end much different thing which was newly adapted to obfuscate that a decade old process was severely limited to gain more control over users devices (inhales).
@ManniCalavera @rolenthedeep @soop it still means what it means. if anything, google has restricted sideloading.
@rolenthedeep @soop looking at that article, to me it seems like the widely used meaning of "downloading an app from a website and then installing it as an app on your phone" doesn't even qualify as sideloading?
@raphaelmorgan @rolenthedeep @soop in its original meaning, no it wouldn't. I still use the term broadly because we write Android software for clients that we can't be bothered to try and distribute through official channels.
As much of a geek and historical cypherpunk as I am, I think walled gardens really do protect most people from their own ignorance and I see the value, so long as we can bypass them when desired (its like 2 clicks on Android).

@mikebabcock @raphaelmorgan @rolenthedeep @soop will it still be 2 clicks after the proposed changes? Honest question

This looks like what Doctorow once called "the war on general computation" or something :(

@rolenthedeep @soop I mean, sure, but that article also calls out how the word is used like the original comment says. Right above the historical part that you linked. The term has changed.
@soop To paraphrase Doctorow, it's misdemeanor contempt of business model.

@soop that's only a thing (and a crime) in the US though. Such a weird thing that your government doesn't even trust you to cross the street except in officially sanctioned locations.

I can cross the street wherever I want free from legal peril.

@soop
Somehow I associate "sideloading" with cyberpunk... with the corresponding implications about the setting and the corporations
@soop what do you mean you "walk"? isn't that illegal?
@soop It's like β€œjaywalking” β€” but after you actually paid for the street.
@soop
felony contempt of business model, as Cory Doctorow put it
@soop indeed
fuck all corpos, i'll do whatever the hell i want with my devices

(*meanwhile my android tablet that runs docker thanks to frankensteining the kernel:
:blobcat_glare:)
@soop
I'd like to add that "App" was coined for a similar purpose.
drm has the same issue, by calling it digital rights management you concede that the opponent has the right to do it. language is extremely important and corpos rule most of it.
@soop as in, you are actually free to cross the street however you like, but corpos made you abide by traffic rules?

@soop

first step is killing the cop in your head.

and while you're at it, kill your heroes and burn your idols as well.

@soop I always assumed sideloading meant installing via ADB or whatever the iOS equivalent is via a computer, I just refer to installing APKs and IPAs as installing an app like you would an exe on Windows

@soop

Jaywalking of device use 🀑

@soop good argument, though they also use their term sideloading for loading books you didnt buy from them into an ereader. Just 'loading books' I suppose.

@soop
90s Install the Computer Program
00s Install the Application
10s Install the App
20s Get the App

"They simplified the terms to accommodate their corporate ideals"
"They made up words to separate their "good" from our "bad""

- "Advanced development features" such as "sideloading" unverified external software.

1. It's not an "Advanced feature", we have been able to install software on devices since the beginning of the computers. We are doing it every day.

2. Sideloading: There is no "side", you make it sound like there is a side of "good" and "bad" apps. Also it's not "loading" we are installing them just like any other app.

3. "Unverified": Who cares whatever you "verify" or not. Software is software. When you try to run uncertified software on Windows or Mac it runs without a problem. Why should this be any different?

4. "External": External to what? To you? To the phone? You are not my phone, you are not my friend, you are a multimillion dollar company. You don't get to decide what I put on my phone.

@meluzzy @soop windows gives you like a giant full screen popup asking whether you trust some unverified program
@meluzzy @soop @tauon also just verified by whom ...? exactly and why should i trust them to verify my software for me; what if the verified publishers are often the ones doing the most malicious shit
@Li @meluzzy @tauon ooooo trust the corporation oooooo big corpobro knows what's best for you ooooo /s

@soop @meluzzy @tauon on windows the answer is the CA store, which you can actually add your own stuff into or remove anything, its convoluted but possible, these days; that option is seemingly missing and im expected to trust whatever appointed ""authority figure"" they give me, on what softeare i can run in general,

authorities not be abusive challenge ! (impossible)

@soop @Li @meluzzy @tauon bonus points if said corpo is subject to laws that mandate them to integrate #Govware #Backdoors and hand over data...

This is why #IRC & #XMPP outlived #ICQ & #Skype and why #Mumble & #JitsiMeet will outlive #discord & #GoogleMeet!

CLOUD Act - Wikipedia

@Kevin Karhan :verified: Anything will outlive Google products that have nothing to do with search, mail, maps, Android and advertisement. (Google+? Picasa? Google Talk? Google Reader? Google Hangouts?) Even Gmail and Google Maps only survive because they've become so ubiquitous that people think e-mail and online maps are Google products.

@jupiter_rowland granted both #GMail and #GoogleMaps make profit via commercial offerings (#GoogleWorkspace & paywalled #API access respectably)…
I made my sibling use organinc/comaps, and slowly but steadily, our entire friend group started using it.
First because they wanted to save data, then because it listed all the nearby benches, water taps and public toilets.
But in the end, i am confident in making the degoogle their lives
pruning the apples will be a lot harder but i have time.
@Li @soop @meluzzy exactly there are viruses but are verified in stores like the play store or steam
@Li @soop @meluzzy not that steam doesn't allow "sideloading" but they also verify things
