The Education Dept has concluded George Mason University violated Title VI of the #CivilRights act by using race in hiring & promotion, the dept announced Friday.

In a proposed resolution agreement, the #Education dept’s Office of *#CivilRights* asked President Gregory Washington to issue an apology to the #GMU community, conduct trainings to ensure #race is not used in any #university policy & revise policies as necessary.

In a statement, Acting Asst Secretary for Civil Rights Craig Trainor alleged Washington implemented “unlawful #DEI policies that intentionally *discriminate* on the basis of race.”

The #Trump admin has launched investigations at #universities across the country over #diversity, #equity & #inclusion policies in an effort to reshape higher #education. In Virginia, those efforts led to the resignation of #UniversityOfVirginia President James E. Ryan earlier this summer.

The #Trump admin has initiated several investigations into #GMU’s #DEI practices, which has led some at the university to worry that Washington could suffer a similar fate to Ryan. At a board meeting early this month, Washington’s supporters worried the school’s governing body — which is made up entirely of appointees by #Republican Gov #GlennYoungkin — could fire the school’s first #Black president. The board instead gave him a state-mandated raise.
