#QuestionOfTheDay most nonsensical romantic pairing in a fictional work that hurts your enjoyment of it?

#fiction #movies #film #anime #manga #TV #television #comics #comicbooks #videogames #musicals #books

@ami_angelwings this is so niche but back when I was actively into Elsword I also read the light novels since they centered around my fav character, Add. And then partway through he had to travel to an alternate universe (normal for this setting) but the only way to get back was a true loves kiss thing??? With Ara??? Why is that even necessary when he’s on the character path of like being able to rend spacetime to shreds while struggling with the knowledge that he is his own worst enemy and just fall into the same mistakes that caused his future self to go back and destroy the happiness of all other versions of himself???
It upset me so much I started a rewrite of the whole thing (I did not get past chapter 1)
@ami_angelwings The Scarlet Witch and Vision never made a damn bit of sense to me. Even just in the comics when they started that in the 1970s and 80s. Makes even less sense in the movie/TV format. I've never liked any story that focused on their relationship.

@SKleefeld @ami_angelwings
The movie version made a little sense. She lost her brother and now she's alone in America, living in Avengers tower, with this very weird, very kind stranger. They both learn together.

I wish the movies had spent more time on them.

@SKleefeld @ami_angelwings my favorite marvel couple since I was little, but I still like your writing!
@zhinxy I appreciate your not holding that against me! 🙂
@ami_angelwings Longmire going full-on Walt/Vic at the end. One couple who really should have stayed UST.
@ami_angelwings I hated the man in The Last Unicorn

@ami_angelwings Kumiko and Shuichi in Hibike Euphonium

I don't actually care, it's the bad fandom that screams about that and the "yuri bait" and etc etc.

@speckledlemon @ami_angelwings Agreed on that but the one that I found actively creepy in #anime_eupho was Reina’s crush on Taki-sensei (for obvious age-related reasons). Fortunately, he never really seemed to notice, let alone be interested in that or encourage it but even so…
@ami_angelwings in ST Voyager, possibly Lizard Janeway and Lizard Paris

@ami_angelwings Alicia and her supposed (since we never actually see him) husband in #ARIAtheORIGINATION.

I utterly adore #ARIA but Kozue Amano’s refusal to commit to yuri pairings actively ruined S2 of #Amanchu for me.

@ami_angelwings laughing in aromantic because by this point I'm happy to see a romantic couple who actually like each other. So, basically everything except Lily and Arnice from Night of Azure.

@ami_angelwings
Empire Strikes Back is probably the best Star Wars movie, but every scene with Han and Leia is cringe inducing.

Leia was such an inspiring bad ass in Star Wars. Then Lucas's wife left him, and he never wrote a decent role for a woman again.

@strangething @ami_angelwings I agree, and then I think "ewoks" which bug me only slightly less than JarJar, at which point I realize it's all been downhill since the first and only.

@phaedral @ami_angelwings

The entire Star Wars franchise is built on the strength of the middle third of one movie.

@strangething
And its still somehow the best of the mainline romances...
Anakin - Padme is problematic, and Rei - Kylo is just yuck
@ami_angelwings

@abeforfdv @ami_angelwings

Yeah, Anikin & Padme are both psychos, and Rei and Kylo never felt romantic to me at all.

@strangething @abeforfdv I thought Anakin and Padme didn't work but actually in retrospect those two deserve each other and would totally be like the school shooting couple irl
@strangething @ami_angelwings there’s a generation of filmmakers who saw Harrison Ford’s romantic performances and made a sequel where he’s back as an old deadbeat dad (see also: Blade Runner, Indiana Jones)
@ami_angelwings not the worst, or even a series I think about often, but I was extra annoyed when both Fringe and Being Human shoehorned two leads into ~*~romance~*~ when they had zero sexy/cozy chemistry but really good friend energy before then
@ami_angelwings contrast sleepy hollow, where the two leads clearly loved and enjoyed each other's company, and they let them continue doing that instead of comphetting it to shit
@ami_angelwings many come to mind - Jack and Kate in lost, Mickey and Martha in Doctor Who, Fez and Jackie in That '70s Show... But the thing about Ted and Robin in HIMYM, and IMO the reason they're such a popular choice of rage-inducing pair is that we HAD seen the characters do their best with the chemistry they had, and we HAD seen why they were better off as friends. Nobody was left hoping they could still make it work except, apparently, the people calling the shots behind the scenes!
@zhinxy Ivanova and Marcus in B5 was kinda annoying too especially when JMS revealed that he had considered pairing Ivanova with Lita when she returned (the original pairing planned in the initial treatment) but then decided that 2 lesbian relationships in a row was too repetitive
@ami_angelwings oh God yes!

@zhinxy honestly I think he was just burnt out at that point given that he thought it was ending in season 4 and he didn't want to fight for another lesbian pairing, but he's wrong that there's no meat on the bone, Lita was the one that revealed her girlfriend was a plant and basically "killed" her, but Lita is also not psi corps and there's a lot of interesting love/hate tension to do there

It made no sense that Ivanova instantly was okay with Lita when she basically became their fill in telepath when Ivanova hates every telepath as it is and was only warming up to Talia and then she turned out to be evil

@zhinxy JMS rightfuily gets a lot of credit for his "escape hatches" for characters and their replacements not just being a 1:1 substitution and the plot actually changes with them, but I feel like Lita is the one where he clearly was starting to get burnt out/checked out and didn't care enough to give her anything distinct to do until season 5 when he just shoved her into the Byron arc, and it was clear that was meant to be Ivanova's arc had Christian returned (which would ALSO have sucked)

but Lita showed back up and was just plugged into the "good telepath slot" and accepted by everybody despite that they have no reason to trust her, and Ivanova especially should just hate her...

@zhinxy mickey and martha was nonsensical, lazy, and racist
