I think this shows how @linuxfoundation is not necessarily on our side.

https://social.lfx.dev/@linuxfoundation/114993371357953940

@bagder @linuxfoundation not that I like them, but this is true
@tofu @bagder @linuxfoundation Disagree wholeheartedly; user privacy is as important as fighting the climate emergency, this is not an "either or" situation, we can do both and do so responsibly
@Johns_priv @bagder @linuxfoundation I'm only saying that I've seen the fear of messing up and being on the hook for GDPR violations.

@tofu I am not much of an innovator, but GDPR is the number two reason why I'm not having any self-hosted online presence (the number one being German thing called Impressumspflicht).

I'm all for keeping corporations in check, but also missing the times when you could put silly things online without needing a lawyer.

@bagder @linuxfoundation A Foundation can not be on any side other than that which keeps it going.

I hate when people treat any non-person entity as if they are a friend or something

@bagder @linuxfoundation It's absolutely astounding how disconnected they are from the Linux community. What's even really the point of the LF if they just post and think like any SF tech startup ?

It's embarassing.

@thibault @bagder Because big tech companies are the Linux community the foundation represents; the ones dumping money and resources into the kernel and the foundation and its other projects. They don't care about the Linux user you'd find on Mastodon because ultimately we're a fraction of a fraction of the Linux ecosystem, and more importantly, there's no money in us.

Which isn't to say their stance isn't stupid, it is - but they don't represent our interests.

@DrinkyBird @bagder Do you know of any orgs representing the personal end-users of Linux, and not the corporations exploiting it?
@thibault
Maybe that SF tech scene provides funding
@bagder @linuxfoundation
@bagder @linuxfoundation When looking more in details why it's presented like that, it makes more sense: they are summing up the results of a survey made at a conference in Berkeley. The way they phrase it however makes it sound like it is the Linux Foundation's stance on the subject. If that's the case, yikes. Otherwise, it's just standard bad communication.

@mmby @bagder @linuxfoundation Being sponsored doesn't mean endorsing them.
@mmby @Varpie @bagder @linuxfoundation Yup, lots of AI companies in there.

@bagder @linuxfoundation

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_Foundation

its always important to understand what a "foundation" is founded on.

Linux Foundation - Wikipedia

@bagder @linuxfoundation LF is just a front for Google and other bad actors exploiting free labor and "contributing back" things that make our ecosystems worse.
@bagder @linuxfoundation Note that while Google doesn't even appear as one of the top-tier members, a large portion of the top- and second-tier members are Android phone and SoC vendors. So, effectively, all Google. All representing Google's interests in control.

@dalias @bagder Google was also actively doing meetings with different government's lawyers at ICANN 2016 summer conference. They're relatively quiet about lobbying activities but are present in a lot of places.

Linux Foundation itself has been a front for Intel and Nokia in the past, for example buying domain names from individuals before large corporations announced OSS projects.

@bagder I guess @linuxfoundation is working hard at cancelling trust into them.

  • Maybe they need to stop letting it's biggest members write their #PR?

Cuz this is just unacceptable betrayal!

Kevin Karhan :verified: (@[email protected])

@[email protected] Cuz if not that level of [Betrayal](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GiB6_AQM70k) is something I will not forgive nor forget. So I expect a public apology from you! https://infosec.space/@kkarhan/115010986088720245

@bagder @linuxfoundation WOW. Fuck linux foundation I guess, anti GDPR means pro child harassment. It's black and white.
@bagder Linux Foundation works primarily for large corporations and investors, not for small business. It's what they have been doing since the beginning.
@bagder @linuxfoundation I love risk aversion when it comes to people potentially causing harm to others.

@bagder @chpietsch @linuxfoundation Wait, you’re telling me trillion-dollar corporations like Google, Meta, X, etc., aren’t on my side? What next? Billionaires aren’t our friends?

;)

@aral Thank you for making the screenshot. I thought about doing it. You did it.
@aral @bagder @chpietsch @linuxfoundation Sure! You’ve heard of friends with benefits? They’re your friends as long as it benefits them.
@bagder @linuxfoundation omg thats the worst take I could ever read this year!

@bagder @linuxfoundation They are on the side of their paying members, that's how it's supposed to work. That just happens to sometimes align.

Fortunately they are and always have been terrible at PR so it's easy to tell what their actual members want.

No corporation is on your side unless you own a controlling share of it.

@bagder @linuxfoundation Isn’t the Linux Foundation basically staffed with big business? 🤔

@bagder @linuxfoundation

"Railings near cliff edges fuel a climate of risk aversion slowing free movement."

ETA: Or maybe more topical: "Passwords fuel a climate of risk aversion slowing the flow of information."

@bagder @linuxfoundation

Definitely, the Linux Foundation seems to be out of touch with the grassroots open-source community, let's hope it rectify and soon.

@espn @bagder @linuxfoundation

The Linux Foundation does not care about desktop Linux. It cares about what its sponsors care about. So, the interests of tech giants.

@bagder @linuxfoundation Open Data Formats - Yes!
Open Data - No, thank you!

@bagder @linuxfoundation
Data privacy is in the way says Linux Foundation

Take a look at

https://www.linuxfoundation.org/about/members

Which will make matters clearer. It is an Industrial Interest Group.

@bagder Linux Foundation is extremely corporate. It's a 501(c)6 trade association, not any kind of charity. It is extremely financially motivated. LF can sometimes be useful to free and open source software, but one must never rely on them to advance principles over their large corporate member interests.

(I'm speaking here as someone who co-founded what became a LF Collaborative Project, so I have some experience with them.)

@bagder @linuxfoundation - I’m honestly surprised/let down here - expected better from the LF
@bagder @linuxfoundation I take it they have US-centric "free speech" leanings. ::sigh::
@fishidwardrobe @bagder @linuxfoundation It’s more that they are funded by a lot of companies who prefer easy access to data for AI training.
@bagder @linuxfoundation There's no such thing as an unconditional sponsorship
@bagder @linuxfoundation
Here's an overview of their members. Doesn't look a lot like my side

@bagder I can sense third round of canceling Stallman because he dared to show alternative.

@bagder
But they are right. There are lots of municipalities that instinctively are precautious because of GDPR rules about data that has nothing to do with personal data protection. Just because people now think that data should be secret. Open data is what fuel lots things like open street map and what not.

@linuxfoundation

@bagder @linuxfoundation We're all waiting for Linus opinion about this. 😎🍿
@bagder I was banned from attending their events because I didn’t use a credit card for the payment towards it. We don’t get credit cards like candies in this part of the world as a student.
